'Dasvi', another straight-to-streaming release for junior Bachchan (Telegraph India)

'I want to be front-footed from now on because I feel I have been a little too introverted about my work' — Abhishek.

I have worked on the digital medium for a long time and I understand the penetration that it has. But yes, it’s a very exciting time to be in this career, in any capacity, because of the diverse work that’s happening. (Laughs) I have also said I want to be front-footed from now on because I feel I have been a little too introverted about my work. I am done trying to be a bit shy about my work’. Now I want to go out there and put out that positive energy and say, ‘We’ve made a good film!’ I was an above-average student who was always more interested in drama and sports. I want to be unapologetic about this film.... I was incredibly touched and moved. I was in the middle of a very intense phase as far as my films were concerned, and I wanted a break from that, and do something in a lighter vein, and Dasvi came along. I want to change that! I really believe in this film and what it has to say.... What made you want to do this film? The film also stars Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam Dhar. The Telegraph chatted with Abhishek on Dasvi and why he will not ‘shy away’ from talking about his films anymore.

Dasvi movie review: Abhishek Bachchan and Nimrat Kau..version of ... (Firstpost)

Dasvi – part fun, largely skimming over the surface of its concerns and characters, but with just enough going for it to make it a mildly entertaining ...

This is a rare – and welcome – instance of an actor with dwarfism being treated as a real person rather than a mere source of humour in a Hindi film. Dasvi is written by Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair and Sandeep Leyzell based on a story by Ram Bajpai, with poet-politician Kumar Vishwas as a script and dialogue consultant. Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu is a harmless, well-intentioned coming-of-age film. Sachin-Jigar’s songs for Dasvi include Macha macha re and Ghani trip with their infectious tempo and okay tunes. He is lively and seems to be having a good time here. And Arun Kushwah (credited here as Arun Kushwaha) has a striking personality. What we see of her journey from being a scared pawn is wrapped up during the course of one song, which intercuts between Ganga dancing with his prison-mates and Bimla’s political life. A light touch and vitality somewhat sustain the rest of the film too though it wears thin beyond a point under the weight of its limited substance. This policewoman who is sincere to a career-destroying degree has no layers at all to her character. How did she get to be this person who does not bat an eyelid before chiding the most powerful man in her state or even insulting him publicly? Ganga Ram Chaudhary in Dasvi is chief minister of a north Indian state. Contrary to his expectations, Bimla changes once she gets a taste of authority.

Dasvi movie review: Abhishek Bachchan is A+ but film struggles for ... (Hindustan Times)

Dasvi movie review: Abhishek Bachchan may have delivered a worthy performance but the film fails to make the right impact. | Bollywood.

It remains superficial for most of the story and you wish there was some more focus on that part too. But the film never takes the pain of delving into that transformation. The fantastic first half is laced with a lot of socio-political satire and comic punches that trigger genuine laughter. Meanwhile, the minister is taken to task inside the jail when a strict and lawful cop Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam) is appointed as the new superintendent. The film traces the life of a brash, illiterate and corrupt chief minister Ganga Ram Chaudhary (Abhishek Bachchan), who, for his unexplained criminal records, including an educational scam, is sent to judicial custody. With all good intentions to educate and entertain the audience, Dasvi somewhere falls prey to its own chaos and confusion and ends up all over the place.

Dasvi Movie Review: Abhishek Bachchan impresses as Haryanvi ... (India Today)

Abhishek Bachchan has done an impressive job as a Haryanvi politician in Dasvi. However, the film's story fails to achieve its purpose.

The makers of Dasvi stretched the theme (Right to Education) so long that you forget the purpose this story. Dasvi also seems rushed in the end. Dasvi makes a statement on the importance of education. Unlike Abhishek's excitement for the film ( remember his emotional note?) or the level of promotions the makers did, Dasvi is a simple film that comes with a purpose, which is 'Right to Education'. However, it lacks focus and entertainment. On the other hand, Gangaram's wife Bimladevi (played by Nimrat Kaur) is driven by the lust of power. When Gangaram Chaudhary (played by Abhishek Bachchan) reads this famous line in his textbook in Dasvi, it forces him to ponder upon his rigid ways and question the importance of education.

'Dasvi' review: As a politician educates himself, the fun lies beyond ... (Scroll.in)

Tushar Jalota's film stars Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam Dhar.

The film is as scattershot as Ganga Ram’s attempts to master his textbooks. Nimrat Kaur is a hoot as the embodiment of one of Ganga Ram’s prison lessons – absolute power corrupts absolutely. The chief minister’s compromised aide Tandon (Chittaranjan Tripathy) is an example of how education is meaningless without a spine. After Ganga Ram is arrested in a scam, he hands over the reins to his submissive wife Bimla (Nimrat Kaur) and impatiently waits for bail. The upright and super-strict Jyoti (Yami Gautam Dhar) torments Ganga Ram as might a headmistress a truculent pupil. Bimla’s rampage through the corridors of power and Ganga Ram’s bristling runs-in with Jyoti yield broad and predictable comedy.

Dasvi movie review: Abhishek Bachchan film has some great ideas ... (The Indian Express)

A craven babu (Chittranjan Tripathy) who has served Chaudhary and is now busy yes-ministering his wife, is the butt of bureaucrats-are-no-good-jokes, and a couple of them land. Another is dubbed ‘anti-nasional’ (national), and yet another ‘liberal ki aulaad’. For a film to topline a newly-minted ‘ dasvi pass’ politician whose electoral plank is ‘free education’ is in and of itself a hugely subversive idea, given the current state of the nation. Abhishek Bachchan has the rare gift of not taking himself seriously, and is a perfect match for the kind of character he is playing: it’s a pity that the material never quite knows whether it is an exaggerated parody or a sharp comedy with realistic overtones. Furious Khap leaders are shown swallowing a ‘mixed marriage’, giving Chaudhary a chance to militate against ‘jaatiwaad ka jahar (zeher)’: all of it gets done in a jiffy, without any pushbacks. It has the feel of a modest resort, with Chaudhary disporting himself in a room with mod cons and gadgets, watched over by an obsequious jailor (Manu Rishi Chaddha). All the inmates are orderly and well-behaved, no bristling gangs, no reception committee, zero scary incarceration feels. The only one who barks orders is the newly-arrived prison-in-charge Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam), and everyone falls in line, except of course our hero who roars, till one fine day, he begins purring.

Abhishek Bachchan's new film, Dasvi, has some very overt similarities to the real-life story of ex-Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala who also sat for his Class ...

He was 86 at the time. He was 82 at the time. Four years later, he attempted the Class XII boards, appearing at a centre in the Arya Kanya Senior Secondary School in Sirsa. But he was made to take the English exam for Class X again, as he hadn’t cleared it the first time. There was no research done, in terms of basing the character on a real person. Even my mother used to be a professor back in the day…” I felt instantly connected to the story, because a lot of my family, from my mother’s side, happen to be teachers and professors.

Review: Abhishek Bachchan's 'Dasvi' Makes The Cardinal Mistake ... (The Quint)

Abhishek Bachchan-starrer Dasvi has released on Thursday, 7 April. The film also stars Yami Gautam and Nimrat Kaur.

For a film like this to work, the writing had to be sharper. It would have been interesting to explore the power dynamics between the former and current CM as husband and wife, but the film throws away that chance too. His performance seems laboured and feels more like he is mimicking a politician than actually getting into the skin of his character. The only problem is that it's tough to stay awake because the film presents the idea in the most uninspiring fashion. To fortify his political clout, Ganga Ram appoints his wife Bimla Devi (Nimrat Kaur) as the next CM. Ghunghat clad, leading a bovine existence, Bimla has no idea what has come her way as she falteringly takes her shapath. We must then witness his evolution into a man who finally bows to the reformatory power of education.

Dasvi Review: Abhishek Bachchan Sinks His Teeth Into The Role ... (NDTV)

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam, Nimrat Kaur, Mubashir Bashir Beigh. Director: Tushar Jalota. Rating: One and a half stars (Out of 5).

The principal characters - the politician, his wife, the policewoman and the CM's personal secretary - are all half-baked characters whose past is lost in a haze. How that pans out is what Dasvi is about, but the film never gets a clear view of a focal point because it bites off far more than it can chew and hurtles down a wayward course. He believes he has it in him to master English, Hindi, History, Math, Science, Social Sciences, the works, and complete his school education. The wheels begin to turn when the politician is convicted in a scam and jailed. A film that flagrantly flirts with fatuity and fumbles, falters and falls flat in the process, Dasvi is never in with a chance of getting its act together. It is a crummy political satire that takes upon itself the task of telling the world that education can achieve what power cannot and quotes Nelson Mandela in support of its assertion.

It does address a lot of issues- corruption, red-tapism, honour killing, middle school education and even dyslexia- a disorder that Bachchan himself had in his childhood, but it never goes too deep into any of these issues. Meanwhile, his wife, a coy housewife who has served her husband all her life, suddenly realises the importance of power and respect as she becomes the CM and isn't quite willing to leave it up once her husband is back. Gautam's role is of a no-nonsense cop who knows how to run a jail but also is a reformist and the actress truly delivers her part. He isn't hamming, the humour is sly and that's why more enjoyable. To escape the ordeal initially and then later after facing humiliation, Ganga Ram decides to take his 10th board exams which seems a herculean task for someone who has not studied beyond class VII. He declares that he would not take up the CM's post until he clears his 10th or dasvi. It helps that the casting is pitch-perfect.

Mounted like an amateurish school play, Dasvi is like a vast stretch of dullness, wearying and annoying by turn. Rubbing shoulders with Bapu, Azad, Bose and Lalaji in his imagination (a bit of Lage Raho Munnabhai, some sprinkling of Forrest Gump) while studying history. And kept at the level of broad comedy. It starts off like a political farce but with none of the gags landing well. Not to forget a nod to Mayawati’s obsession with statues as well. Tushar Jalota’s directorial debut Dasvi, spelt the way it has been, in Roman alphabets, initially made me assume that it was on the theme of enslavement of some sort.

Review: Dasvi will have you yawning in class (Livemint)

This Abhishek Bachchan-starrer about a jailed politician who sits for his high school exams is tedious and dated.

But she’s the closest thing in this film to an actual unfeeling, power-hungry politician; Ganga Ram Chaudhary is sentimental whitewashing. The graphics in the Twitter-storm montage—a dreaded mainstay of social media-era Hindi cinema—are stunningly amateur. Chaudhary is soon behind bars in a teacher recruitment scam, but not before installing his wife, Bimla Devi (Nimrat Kaur), on the CM’s seat.

But the hackneyed writing loses that gist somewhere in the middle of the film. But the actor’s potential does not find a conducive space to shine through, especially in the context of his last few films of 2021 — Bob Biswas and The Big Bull — that didn’t impress too much. Here’s hoping that the junior Bachchan also gets better scripts to show what he is capable of. The idea is particularly capturing in a country where less than half of its politicians are literate and yet, hold iron claims over the political hierarchy. Dasvi is apparently based on the former chief minister of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala, who was found guilty of a recruitment scam and served his sentence at the Tihar jail. In Netflix’s Dasvi, Abhishek Bachchan manages to own the film with his natural talent.
