Connor McDavid is on a blazing hot run so it stands to reason that the Edmonton Oilers are too, heading into a key Pacific Division road game Thursday ...

One of those mistakes was surrendering a goal to Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau within the first 10 seconds of the game. Anze Kopitar had two assists to give him 61 points, the 13th time he has reached 60 in 16 seasons, all with the Kings. For that to happen, it was pretty special to be a part of that play.” “Our goalie makes maybe the play of the year there with that save and having the presence of mind to throw it up there,” McDavid said. McDavid chased it down just before the blue line and ended the game with a back-handed goal. Leon Draisaitl was a late stretch, getting what was termed a “maintenance day,” while ending his consecutive-games streak at 354.

Kings look to slow surging Oilers in pivotal game (LA Daily News)

In a crucial four-point matchup, the Kings will welcome the Edmonton Oilers to town on Thursday night, the team they trail by a solitary point for second ...

No. 1 goalie Mikko Koskinen has split a pair of appearances against the Kings this season. McDavid, 25, crossed the threshold against the Kings last week and Draisaitl, 26, surpassed the mark against the Ducks on Sunday. This has been McDavid’s fifth 100-point season and Draisaitl’s fourth. Both McDavid (106) and Draisaitl (101) have more than twice as many points as the next most prolific Oiler, winger Zach Hyman, who has 48. Edmonton, which has won five in a row, is 11-2-1 in its last 14 games. The Kings battled back from a 3-1 deficit to force a shootout last Wednesday in Canada, but Edmonton prevailed. He joined Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli as the only 30-goal scorers for the Kings since the 2009-10 season.

The Day After: Mike Smith, curling champion (Oilers Nation)

Much like a skip at The Brier, Mike Smith had the perfect weight on his draw Tuesday night. Right off the hack, Smith timed it all perfectly.

80 percent control of the shot attempt share, 80 percent control of scoring chances, and a dominant 92.6 percent of the expected goal share. You can’t get the second goal you need and it changed the whole phase of the game and that’s a team that takes advantage of things.” The Sharks were nearly perfect on the defensive end for the first 50 minutes of the game as they owned a 1-0 lead on Tomas Hertl’s first-period power-play goal. “Little bit of a story of our year. While being a road team, the Oilers weren’t able to get much in the way of favourable matchups. They saw a mashup of players and no real hard matchups. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins helped break things open in the third frame down one, when he, alongside Zach Hyman and Darnell Nurse scored a short-handed goal to get the Oilers on the board. Connor McDavid, Evander Kane and Jesse Puljujarvi had what was their worst game together as a trio matched up against San Jose’s second line of Logan Couture, Noah Gregor and Sasha Chmelevski and boy did they struggle. “Down by one heading into the third period, finding a way to win in overtime, dramatic fashion. It was one of the more special ones I’ve been a part of.” And for the, oh, 60 minutes beforehand, you were lulled to sleep by the stagnant pace of play. I kind of sensed out the corner of my eye I saw him move pretty quick so I just tried to get there as quick as I could.

What are the best options to form Nugent-Hopkins' line available for head coach Jay Woodcroft?

Going back to September, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ season has been a moving target. 3 Takeaways From Oilers' 2-1 Win Over the Sharks - 4/5/22 (The Hockey Writers)

Goaltender Mike Smith gave perhaps his best performance of the season, helping the Edmonton Oilers conquer the San Jose Sharks.

While L.A. will be looking to hop back over Edmonton in the standings, the Oilers can strengthen their playoff positioning with a win, particularly in regulation. Most notably, it was the fourth overtime goal of 2021-22 for him, setting a new Oilers single-season benchmark. While the veteran’s play was encouraging, there was some cause for concern, as Smith appeared to be hurt in the late stages of the third. Smith is now 5-1-1 with a 2.57 goals-against average (GAA) and .921 save percentage (SV%) since March 16. His finest play of the game, however, had nothing to do with preventing a goal, but rather creating one. Connor McDavid potted the game-winning goal in overtime after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had tied the game by scoring with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.

The Sharks played well for most of the game but suffered yet another overtime loss against the Oilers on Tuesday night.

Probably one of our better games in the last week." "It’s tough because we give up on our power play goal and it just can’t happen … we give up too many chances on our power play. You get a point, but if you play that way … we have to start scoring, that’s the bottom line. That’s the way we want to play and the frustrating part is that you don’t see the results. For most of the game, the Sharks kept them in check. "A little bit of a story of our year … We had so many chances.

McDavid, Smith Squeeze Two Points Out Of Sharks In 2-1 OT Victory (The Copper & Blue)

The Oilers going with Mike Smith on a night that Leon Draisaitl is out of the lineup makes for some extra worry heading into a game against a beatable opponent.

- The Oilers are in second place in the Pacific by one point, they have a game in hand as well. - The Sharks were all over the Oilers for the second period. The win is Smith’s tenth of the season, his season save percentage vaults over the .900 mark for the first time in a long time. Brassard - Shore - Kassian is a fall from the pier with Nugent-Hopkins playing up the lineup. In a game that could have easily been a four or a five goal night for San Jose, Smith played his best game of the season. Mike Smith was near perfect last night, and it was he who played the puck to a streaking Connor McDavid just thirty seconds into overtime.

4 Oilers Who Can Be the Next Unlikely Playoff Hero (The Hockey Writers)

Not only does Kane have polish and finish around the net, but he also doesn’t pass up an opportunity to finish a check. Also, an under-appreciated ability of his is the willingness and hard work to get the puck in the captain’s hands. Yet, he has the potential to have a huge postseason this year. Foegele is a frustrating player to watch — not in the sense that he does many things wrong, but that it’s baffling why he doesn’t produce more on the scoreboard. In 2011, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Sean Bergenheim finished the regular season with 29 points but went on a tear in the postseason where he tallied nine goals in 16 games. In brief glimpses throughout the season, he’s shown that he has fairly decent hands, like when he undressed a Coyotes defender and roofed the puck over goaltender Vejmelka, earlier in the season. He’s vital down the middle, but he’s shown he can keep up the pace in the top-six on the wing too. Also, his contract is up after this season, and it’ll be extra motivation to have a big postseason and show the Oilers he can play big when it matters the most. He’s only on pace for 25-points in an 82-game season, but he has all the tools to produce more. He’s only on pace for 25 points in an 82-game season, but he’s continued to look more comfortable as the season has progressed. He gained speed through the neutral zone, received a pass from Kailer Yamamoto, split the two Coyotes’ defenders, and tucked the puck five-hole on Karel Vejmelka. Pisani scored timely goals and was an integral part of the Oilers reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2006.

Oilers Rumours and News: Holloway, Kane and Noah Philp (Oil On Whyte)

This article covers a few rumours that have followed the Oilers post trade deadline, and an update with a new signed forward.

The 6’3, 198 pound forward will bring some more competition to the already stacked prospect pool, and will have his chance to prove why he should earn his shot in the NHL while playing with the Condors. The young forward is likely penciled in as a top 9 forward next season, but could have an even bigger role if Evander Kane doesn’t re-sign with the Blue and Orange. Personally, I like the idea of a 4×4, but ideally the Oilers should try and bring the term down to 2-3 years and if they can, move the money down as much as possible.

Oilers' Signee Noah Philp Brings Strong Work Ethic to the System (The Hockey Writers)

Everything you need to know about the most recent signing of the Oilers, Noah Philip, out of the University of Alberta.

The Oilers could have a good one in Philp. Philp should bring a scoring element to the Condors for the remainder of the season, playoffs, and next year. A player like Dylan Holloway, who is almost NHL-ready could be graduating while Xavier Bourgault is a wildcard after a strong preseason showing at the beginning of this season. There are a number of older players and others not expected to return after this season, so it will give him a nice trial during his amateur tryout to get acclimated to the style and speed of the game to be even more effective in a larger role next season. He has spent the last three seasons at the University of Alberta where he has racked up 20 goals and 38 points in 36 regular-season games. He also mentioned he’s good at reading the play and it shows.

WWYDW: How do the 2021-22 Oilers stack up with the 2016-17 team? (Oilers Nation)

The Edmonton Oilers have been playing some of their best hockey in years over the past few weeks. Since a three-game lull back in early March, ...

And then we have the underlying numbers, in which this year’s team is clearly ahead. Unsurprisingly, the 2016-17 team had a higher team save percentage than this year’s team does, as Cam Talbot was much better that year than any goalie the Oilers have currently. The current team scores more on the power play but they also allow more goals on the penalty kill, which isn’t surprising because of the discrepancy with goaltending that I mentioned above. If this year’s team continues to play as they have been over the past few weeks, they’ll likely crack 100 points as well. After 71 games, this year’s Oilers are slightly better than the 2016-17 team was. If you had asked me two months ago which Oilers team was the best of the Connor McDavid era, I would have said that it was the 2016-17 squad and that it wasn’t even a contest.
