Now, as the Omicron variant makes up virtually all cases within the province, experts say it’s resulting in a higher presence of reinfection. Equinor has said the project will provide about $3.5 billion in total revenues for the cash-strapped government of Newfoundland and Labrador. As Canadians face a cost of living crunch, tackling housing affordability is going to be a main feature of Thursday's federal budget, CTV News has learned. Equinor has said Bay du Nord would likely start pumping in the latter half of the decade, and continue producing for 20 to 30 years. Premier Andrew Furey was beaming at an evening news conference, saying the project will be an economic driver for his province. CTVNews.ca looks at the Putin family history. He said projects like this one, which have a carbon footprint compatible with addressing climate change, are going to ultimately displace oil production that do not. "So that was a challenge for me to go against this institution." "Well, that's what we have to do," he said. Greenhouse gas emissions from production are anticipated to be as low as eight kilograms per barrel. That means the company will have to offset or capture any emissions the project produces by 2050. Production is expected to peak at around 200,000 barrels a day.

Opposition Leader David Brazil says Bay du Nord has always been the right project for Newfoundland and Labrador and the country, despite the “dithering” of the federal Environment Minister to appease cabinet colleagues in Ontario and BC. The provincial Opposition meanwhile is pleased that Bay du Nord has received environmental approval, despite what they call Liberal reluctance to allow the project to go ahead. Canada in deepwater: behind the Trudeau government's approval of ... (The Narwhal)

Canada's Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has approved the controversial Bay du Nord deepwater offshore oil project in Newfoundland.

A lack of baseline information was brought up both by Fisheries and Oceans scientists and Indigenous groups that participated in the project review. “Whether it’s DFO upper management or the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, someone needs to show their work,” Kath told The Narwhal about Equinor’s impact statement passing an environmental assessment. An obvious one, she points out, is that the largest oil spill in Newfoundland and Labrador’s history wasn’t mentioned in a discussion of historical spills: a 250,000-litre spill in 2018 from the SeaRose Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading vessel. She could only compare the Fisheries and Oceans report with Equinor’s final environmental impact statement, and note what was left out. It noted several instances of interference, including in a report on mitigating the impacts of oil and gas exploration on corals and sponges. “As a result, the Bay du Nord Development Project may proceed, subject to some of the strongest environmental conditions ever, including the historic requirement for an oil and gas project to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.” But notes from a meeting between the agency and various Indigenous groups in August 2020, after the final statement was submitted, includes a participant question on why Indigenous groups were consulted after Equinor had already received significant input from the government. The report is a review of Equinor’s draft environmental impact statement for Bay du Nord, and states that Fisheries Department scientists found several cases where information was mischaracterized and relevant research was left out. While the report itself was not submitted to the agency or Equinor, Sauvé said that the information was shared through workshops, conversations, discussions and in-depth technical reviews. As premier, I have been in contact with the prime minister and he understands the importance of this project to our province,” Furey said in a press release shortly after the latest decision delay. Several politicians have used the opportunity to promote homegrown resources as the answer and Bay du Nord, like Alberta’s oilsands projects, has been a focus of the promotion. “The project has undergone a robust federal environmental assessment and scrutiny through every part of Canada’s legislated review process.

Oil industry calls Bay du Nord approval triumph, climate advocates ... (CBC.ca)

Reaction from Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond is pouring in following the federal approval of the Bay du Nord oil project on Wednesday.

Oil, gas, coal, any of it — we need to be done." While it is true that Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore emits fewer emissions during extraction than other producers, extraction only accounts for about 15 per cent of a barrel's total emissions. On Monday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure would be "moral and economic madness." Supporters of the project, which include the Newfoundland and Labrador government and the local oil industry, say it will help the province transition to renewable energy while meeting continuing global demand for oil. "We have to take responsibility for the impacts of the oil and gas that we put into the world." Meanwhile, climate scientists and environmental activists say the project flies in the face of federal climate goals and the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The decision comes four years after it was first proposed by Equinor; the Liberal government was not unanimous in its support of the project, sources say.

“At the end of the day climate change is driven by what atmosphere sees and not necessarily by production. As such, adding Bay du Nord to Canada’s oil production inventory won’t add a whole lot in the way of emissions. On Wednesday, Equinor spokesperson Alex Collins said the company expects to make a final investment decision in the next couple of years with first oil in late-2028. A 2021 analysis by data firm Rystad Energy put the average carbon dioxide produced in the oil sands at around 73 kg per barrel of oil. Offshore oil drilling comes with vastly lower emissions than onshore production, particularly compared with Alberta’s oil sands, which comprise the bulk of Canadian production. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault approved the Bay du Nord development Wednesday despite pressure from some political parties and environmental groups to reject it.

The federal government has formally approved the Bay du Nord offshore oil megaproject off eastern Newfoundland.

Furey said his government is still committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, but insisted Bay du Nord should be part of a transition to renewable energy. On Monday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure would be "moral and economic madness." Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore does emit fewer emissions during extraction than other producers, but extraction only accounts for about 15 per cent of a barrel's total emissions. The project will be Newfoundland and Labrador's fifth offshore oil field to move into production since Hibernia launched in 1997. Climate scientists and environmentalists have scoffed at the description. Guilbeault's decision on whether Bay du Nord would proceed was originally scheduled for December, but was delayed until March 6.
