Florida moves eight points ahead of second-place Toronto in the Atlantic Division standing, becomes first team to clinch berth in playoffs.
On top of that, the Panthers got away with a buzzer-beater. Bobrovsky went into the game 33-6-3 with a .914 save percentage and seven successive wins but was forced to the bench after stopping just 10 of 14 shots. It was a thrilling comeback and an entertaining exhibition of hockey put on by two teams that both aspire to go deep in the postseason. The loss may sting, but Toronto got three of a possible four points against two formidable opponents. A lot of players statistics got padded on Tuesday. Marner had two goals and two assists. They have reached the playoffs in three straight campaigns for the first time in history and will try to win their first series since the 1996 Eastern Conference final against the Penguins. They dispatched with them easily in the first meeting on March 27 at Scotiabank Arena but things were much different on Florida’s home ice. The left wing scored twice and had three assists in the victory and in doing so became the first player in franchise history to reach 100 points in a single season. John Tavares scored on a power play with 3:54 left and it was 6-6. Then the Panthers responded with three in a row to revive the crowd at FLA Live Arena. When Jake Muzzin made it 5-1 at 8:40 of the second in his first game back since he suffered a head injury on Feb. 21, it looked all but over. Their 24 wins from behind this season are tied for the most in the league with the New York Rangers. So in rather short order, Sam Reinhart, Radko Gudas and Claude Giroux unloaded on Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell, causing him to be pulled after 25 minutes.
SUNRISE, Fla.—Auston Matthews didn't score. But it felt like everyone else did in a madcap, penalty-filled game that ended with the Florida Panthers beating ...
He was traded to the Islanders in a multiplayer deal for Michael Grabner in 2015. That put Keefe in somewhat of a pickle over who to take out of the lineup. Robert Hagg’s hard shot to Källgren’s head forced the Leafs goalie from the game, and Claude Giroux scored on Florida’s third shot on Campbell. He’s still a playmaker, but he’s the best shooter in the league.” Nylander scored on the Leafs’ second power play. Radko Gudas’s short-handed goal on a slapshot brought the FLA Live Arena to life. Blackwell finished a tic-tac-toe passing play with Rielly and Pierre Engvall at 2:04. The three goals, within 94 seconds of each other, chased Bobrovsky. Muzzin scored on Spencer Knight. He came out of the game after taking a hard shot to the head. The Leafs were up 5-1 when T.J. Brodie failed to convert on a breakaway. Marner also scored on the power play just 37 seconds after his short-handed goal. And the Leafs are still on a 5-0-1 run. You can’t chase the puck on the penalty kill.
The Toronto Maple Leafs waited until the end of the season to get their games against the Eastern Conference leading Florida Panthers.
I don’t know if Florida played it slow on purpose to start, or just took advantage of a Leafs team that played another highly ranked team last night. Back to the other end where Tavares almost does the deed, then Sam Bennet comes close to scoring for Florida. Campbell makes the needed saves and the fame goes to overtime. It pays off when Nylander passes to Tavares who ties the game at sixes! The Panthers don’t let up after they tie the game, and hammer the Leafs while controlling play. Kyle Clifford is called for slashing and the Panthers score on their early in the third power play, to tie the game at fives. He makes a quick glove save off the faceoff, but Claude Giroux scores his first as a Panther after a cross crease pass. The Leafs get a too many men penalty. The Panthers flurry of offense continues as the crash the net and make some nice three way passes to get shots off. The Leafs get lucky on a couple shots as Källgren is far, far, out of the net. The Leafs give up their offensive advantage when TJ Brodie is called for hooking, and the Panthers get a power play. The Toronto Maple Leafs waited until the end of the season to get their games against the Eastern Conference leading Florida Panthers. On March 27th they defeated the, 5-2 at home, and now they make their first trip to an area near but not in Miami, to play the Panthers in their home.
Sure, the Maple Leafs and Panthers want to fix aspects of their game after Florida's wild 7-6 OT win. But they should also focus on the positives.
No doubt, both the Maple Leafs and Panthers want to play tighter games. Instead of worrying about the Panthers’ ability to defend, maybe they should be exalted for never giving up? Are the Panthers perfect? The Panthers have already put together a ludicrous 23 comeback wins. Clearly, the Panthers are no normal team. Both teams are extremely good, yet they won’t need to wait long to face a different, extremely good opponent. At least if you don’t want to overreact to your team’s highs and lows. This feels like another important time to lay that argument out. the Panthers. He’d end up with a whopping four points (2G, 2A) in this one. We see it all the time with high-scoring teams. Watching games like Tuesday’s wild Maple Leafs – Panthers slugfest sometimes feels like observing some wild, woolly endangered species.
Coming off a highly-impressive team effort in a playoff atmosphere in Tampa Bay, the Maple Leafs have made the trip south to Sunrise to face the ...
I really liked what I’ve seen from them, and now you add in Blackwell and Abruzzese. I thought [Abruzzese] had a great game on the road against Tampa last night — not an easy thing for a player with his inexperience to do, but he showed positive progression, so we like how some of that depth is coming together. No doubt, he makes a big difference to the mindset of our team and the confidence of our team. This is different, though — we truly have seven guys that can play every night and can play in any situation. That’s the decision we’ll make here today, but I think we’re in a good spot here now with Muzzin coming back. When you have a player like [Barkov] on your team, he can play anywhere and probably be the best player in any position. Obviously, his shot is elite and he’s just always in the mix. We know we’re both going to be in and we’re going to have to go through each other if we want to win, so it’s just fun to see where we’re at right now. Holl’s game is in a better place than it was when the two last played together, and hopefully, Muzzin is rejuvenated and refreshed in a similar manner to Jack Campbell since his layoff. The Panthers have scored 23 times and given up 13 in just four games, while the Leafs have scored 25 and given up 12. Different challenges arise every game — you play some teams that are out of the playoffs that play extremely hard and other teams don’t so it’s hard to gauge. This will be a tough test against a rested Panthers team playing at home (where they’re 28-6-0), but the Leafs might be able to ride in on the wave from last night’s victory and jump on Florida early. Comparatively, the Leafs have wins against the Lightning, Panthers, and Bruins all within the last nine days.
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jonathan Huberdeau had two goals, including the game winner in overtime Tuesday night, and the Florida Panthers outlasted the Toronto Maple ...
"We're really good at home, and it's because of these guys," Huberdeau said as he pointed to the fans in his postgame in-arena interview on the bench. Mitchell Marner, Matthews' linemate, had two goals and four points in the loss for the Maple Leafs, who had defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 6-2, the night before. Florida has now won five in a row, and eight of nine. At 102, Huberdeau ended his night second in the league in scoring. Auston Matthews, Toronto's leading scorer, came into the game needing one goal to get to 55, which will be a single-season record for the Original Six franchise. Tuesday's game featured four goalies, two short-handed goals, six power-play goals, and fans of both teams on their feet most of the night.
Call it a potential playoff preview, call it a collapse, call it a comeback or simply call it a fun night at the rink — the only thing Toronto's hectic 7-6 ...
That’s a big factor here,” said the coach, in favour of internal competition. • The Maple Leafs have faced the Panthers twice now… April 23 will be the final shot a revenge match. We rise to the occasion,” Spezza said. “I was looking to come out of this segment with a sense of whether we can compete with the very best in our division. Naturally, Florida, which allowed five in a row, scored the next five. “It’s great to play the really good teams. “You don’t want wild swings in the game. “Muzz is a huge guy in our locker room. (Mario Lemieux held the previous record at 47 seconds, in 1989.) I think that answer is unequivocally yes." In a blink, the Maple Leafs led 5-1…
