That’s especially true considering Atlanta gives up the second-most points to shooting guards in the NBA (24 per contest). The strength of the Hawks’ defence is the rim protecting Clint Capela provides, which should mean the Raptors lean more on perimeter shooters like Trent. Toronto has surrendered an average of 105.4 points in 18 games since the beginning of March, with opponents hitting 112 or more just six times. With some of Atlanta’s secondary scoring hobbled, it looks like they’ll need Trae Young to carry the offence. That’s not always a bad thing for the Hawks, but the Raptors allow the second-fewest points to point guards in the NBA (20 points per game on 41.1 percent shooting). Hawks under 111.5 (-105): This doesn’t seem daunting for a team as explosive as the Hawks, but it’s actually higher than their average on the road (110.9). The Raptors allow just 106.3 per game at Scotiabank Arena and their defence has been particularly strong in recent weeks. - Raptors -3 (-125)

Hawks vs Raptors Picks and Predictions: Toronto Hones in on D (Standard Freeholder)

As the NBA regular season winds down, the Toronto Raptors are looking to secure their spot in the playoffs and avoid the play-in tournament.

You could tell Fred VanVleet’s knee was bothering him for a while, as he wasn’t getting much jump on his 3-pointers and coming in and out of the lineup. VanVleet drilled five threes against the Magic, and followed that up with four more against the Heat. That should mean plenty of opportunities for Fred to let it fly in this one. Trae Young has led the way for the Hawks during this run, putting up 30.8 points to go along with a whopping 11.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds. Additionally, VanVleet was notably nursing a knee injury in that game and was clearly not able to put his best effort in. Meanwhile, despite the Hawks’ excellent offense, this team still really struggles to defend the 3-point line. But the Hawks will prove to be a tough test. They’ve done so thanks to getting mostly healthy and the All-NBA level of play from Pascal Siakam. Meaning that hosting the 7-8 play-in game is certainly within reach. This spread for this Eastern Conference clash opened with the Raptors as 4-point home favorites. Or do the Hawks have value as underdogs? Can Toronto end Atlanta’s run and cover the spread as short home favorites?

Recap: Toronto Raptors clinch playoff spot, beat Atlanta Hawks 118 ... (RaptorsHQ)

Finishing the game on a 16-5 run, Toronto locks down a top six seed in the East thanks to a win and a Cavaliers loss to Orlando.

By getting on the glass, scampering around on defense, and running everything through Siakam — the Raptors showed they have multiple ways to win a game, which is exactly what you want to see three games before the playoffs begin. Precious Achiuwa had 11 points and was a game-high +21. Chris Boucher kept a Siakam-less bench lineup alive thanks to two three-pointers early in the fourth, on his way to 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. It was a clinic, and even the minutes down the stretch when Atlanta put their best defenders in Clint Capela and Deandre Hunter on him, Siakam was able to adjust and find ways to be effective. Khem Birch had one of his best games of the season with five points and eight boards in 24 minutes, proving a decent foil for the outstanding Trae Young-Capela pick and roll connection. Winning the rebounding battle 60-43 begins to give you an idea of how the Raptors balanced the books on Atlanta, even in a game where the Hawks made five more threes than Toronto. With VanVleet struggling to shoot all night, more work was pushed through Pascal. This meant running point guard in bench lineups with the chaos agents — Precious Achiuwa, Chris Boucher and Scottie Barnes — while adjusting to work more in the flow of the offense with the starters.
