Gameday: Maple Leafs @ Lightning (Pension Plan Puppets)

It's time for the annual nice, relaxing Florida road trip in the spring.

Vasilevskiy, not surprisingly, has not maintained a third year of Vezina level play non-stop, but he’s been better than every single Leafs goalie, and most of the rest of the league too. What the Lightning do have is a little bit more raw shooting talent than the Leafs. Stamkos v Matthews is basically a wash in terms of their ability to get goals above expected. But their best player has to still be their best player for them to be the team that rolled to the cup last year. They have a lot of players injured, they need to practice with the new players, and it’s impossible to just dial back and relax too much. I saw a headline today that the Leafs “must” be better defensively in these games, and you know, they really don’t have to be. The final month of the season is jam-packed with one game for every two days left, and the Leafs are going to finish tired.

Matthews scores hat-trick as Leafs sinks Bolts (The Globe and Mail)

Matthews ties Toronto Maple Leafs franchise record as Toronto tops division rival in Tampa.

The Maple Leafs played without William Nylander, who missed the game with a non-COVID-19-related illness. The Bolts Nation has high hopes for a third consecutive Stanley Cup but may have to go through Toronto in the first round to do it. Alexander Kerfoot added another with 7:35 to go in the second. Vasilevskiy came in at 35-14-4 with a .919 save percentage. The 24-year-old centre has at least one goal in 12 of the last 13 games and 47 over the last 47. “We came on this trip excited about the opportunity,” Sheldon Keefe said. “Man, it’s fun to watch him,” Campbell said. Pierre Engvall netted a 30-foot wrist shot less than two minutes after the puck drop to put Toronto ahead. At this point Toronto and Tampa Bay look similar to one another. With 13 regular-season contests left, neither is likely to catch the first-place Panthers with Bruins the only other possible combatant for either to start the post-season. He also scored twice in the second period, both times on assists from Mitch Marner. “I feel like a proud brother,” Marner, who had a goal and three assists, said.

The Leafs week ahead: Tough Florida trip, Muzzin returning, and a ... (The Leafs Nation)

It seems like another big week for Toronto, and until they get that "x" next to their name on the standings page, I guess they'll all be big weeks.

While Abruzzese playing for the Leafs burned a year of his contract, that won’t be the same for Knies, who is still subject to the entry-level contract slide. The usage of Knies in the Leafs’ lineup will probably mirror what we’ve seen from Abruzzese. He’s likely to get a taste of the fourth line and could be a scratch the majority of the time. If Minnesota wins, they’ll be in the final, and the tournament concludes on Saturday night, so no matter what by Sunday there is a chance that Knies is on a plane to Toronto and we find out if he can be the big-bodied saviour of the Leafs’ undersized forward group. Clinching early would be nice, but the Leafs may want to battle for a better home ice advantage by going for the second spot in the division. The Leafs need some combination of four wins or Islanders losses in order to clinch a playoff spot this week. FIFTY FOUR FOR MATTHEWS AND THE HAT TRICK!!! Matthews was patient finding Marner as he drifted up in the zone. Marner was patient finding Matthews as he was shuffling down the zone. Cernak got a penalty and the Leafs got the first power play with four minutes left in the first. It was a very good period for the Leafs, who not only took a two-goal lead, but removed the Lightning from the front of the net. He was able to go wide on the Lightning defense and get real chances on Vasilevskiy. It was a good period from the Leafs, who beat the Lightning ever so slightly at 5v5 along with a power play each. The Leafs got out of the period but will start the next one down a man. Mitch Marner scored a goal to join Matthews with a four-point night as the best duo in the league created all four goals with each other. Then the second unit nearly got another from a point shot by Giordano, allowing Mikheyev to nearly bury the rebound. Matthews has 13 more games to go in the regular season — a full bakers dozen — to hit 60 and beyond. His shot from the side of the slot went right in the exact same spot as his last goal the other night. Auston Matthews scored goals 52, 53, and 54 to tie the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise record for goals in a season with Rick Vaive. Matthews also extended his Rocket Richard lead by four goals over his opposition.
