Environment Canada says an incoming Pacific weather system is expected to bring 25-40 cm between Hope and Merritt beginning later Sunday.

Rainfall amounts near 50 to 70 mm are expected before the heavy rain eases to showers Monday morning.โ€ Snow at times heavy will continue through Monday and taper off to a few flurries Tuesday afternoon.โ€ It also told motorists to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Drivers are being advised to rethink their travel plans because of an approaching winter storm along the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt.

The heaviest snowfall is anticipated on Monday when the system will move further inland. When snow levels drop tonight, it will result in widespread snow along the highway. Precipitation will begin as snow this afternoon, and snow levels are expected to rise near 1,000 to 1,200 metres.

The Halifax Regional Education Center has triggered a number of protests on social media, announcing that all schools will open on Monday, despite the snow warning being issued.
