Sheldon Keefe Post Game, Leafs 6 vs. Flyers 3: “It was not a very good hockey game by us… We maybe showed up for an easy game, and they didn't give it to us”.
It is a tough game for a guy like him to play tonight. That line didn’t get a lot of ice today. I would say disappointing for sure, but not concerning in the sense that I know what our team is capable of doing. We have played really well when we have really been pushed by top teams, and tonight in the third period. We had the puck and had them really running. We got some really good opportunities in the third period and made good on them.
Not for the first time, the Toronto Maple Leafs started another run-of-the-mill game slowly but defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 on Saturday thanks to a ...

(The combatants would later get their fight, and the crowd roared.) “A lot of it is [because] the opponent plays well. The Toronto Maple Leafs touched down in Philadelphia crashing off an emotional wave.

Tonight Jack Campbell returns to the starters net after sitting out most of March with a rib injury. Tonight the Toronto Maple Leafs are in Philadelphia to take on the Flyers, and no one is talking about Auston Matthews 50 goals. Their two week road trip saw them lose to the Red Wings, Avalanche, Predators, and Wild, all games were lost by 3+ goals, and their only win came against the Blues.
The final 20 minutes featured Auston Matthews' 51st goal of the season as Toronto kicked off a four-game trip with its fourth win in a row, beating the Flyers 6 ...

It definitely was nice to hit a reset button, work on some details and work hard in the gym.” Matthews and Mitch Marner did their thing, hooking up for Matthews’ 51st goal at 7:41 of the third to break a 2-2 tie. “In the third, we just took over,” Matthews said. To say it will be key for Campbell, who was on the sideline as he recovered from a rib injury, to return to his all-star form after struggling for a couple of months would be an understatement. “I had fun.” Each team scored two goals in the second period. “That save he made early in the game (a glove on Morgan Frost), that’s Jack at his best. Jack finally gets back, Maple Leafs use third period to blow Flyers away And just to be sure their No. 1 netminder could get in a groove in his first game since March 8, the Leafs didn’t have much interest in beating the Philadelphia Flyers until pulling away in the third period. We maybe showed up for an easy game and they didn’t give it to us. That first period especially, the first 10 minutes or so, was a disaster by us in front of him. “I love the way he played.

Only the Panthers have scored more first-period goals than the Leafs this season while the Flyers have given up the third-most first-period goals since January 1. This was already one of the worst offenses in hockey before trading away its captain and leader Claude Giroux. Now, this is a team that has Kevin Hayes as the No. 1 centerman and an unrecognizable bottom six. With Mike Yeo possibly losing the dressing room with Yandle likely sitting, this Flyers team could come out flat and uninterested. The Leafs are getting scoring from all three lines with William Nylander now contributing on the third line, but we can’t expect them to score six goals tonight. Campbell is also a big favorite in the dressing room so we’d expect a disciplined defensive game in front of the Toronto netminder tonight. The Flyers generated a ton of chances in their previous game but still lost 4-1 to the Wild, which was their third straight defeat. Saturday’s meeting with the struggling Flyers is the first of a critical four-game road trip for the Leafs, which will stop off in Tampa, Miami, and Dallas. Another developing situation is the status of defenseman Keith Yandle. The Philly D-man has played in 989 consecutive games (an NHL record) but could possibly be scratched tonight with what is being described as an illness, but the tag could just be a courtesy for the veteran. The total is sitting at 6.5 and beginning to steam to the Over. Toronto won 3-0 in Philadelphia earlier in the season as -124 road favorites but a lot has changed since then. Basically, under most circumstances, this would be a great spot to fade the Leafs as big road favorites, but the Flyers are dealing with a lot of issues themselves (injuries, Yandle, schedule, poor play, etc.) and are rolling with a very inexperienced roster, especially on the blue line if Yandle sits. Can the Leafs get two points in front of Jack Campbell, who will be making his first start in nearly a month? Can the Flyers put in a decent effort despite the noise regarding Keith Yandle possibly sitting?
The Flyers will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at 7 p.m. in South Philly in the second of three meetings between these two teams in the 2021-22 ...
The Maple Leafs are one of the top teams in the NHL, currently neck-and-neck with the Tampa Bay Lightning for second place in the Atlantic Division and sitting at sixth in the league in points percentage. * The Leafs are scoring on a whopping 30% of their power play opportunities. People love to hate on the Leafs, but I really don’t care about them one way or the other, so seeing them win the cup with Simmonds on the roster would second on my preferred 2022 outcomes only to a Florida Panthers’ victory. The Flyers currently have the fifth-least points in the league and the fifth-worst points percentage. He was the Flames' captain for eight seasons, succeeding Jarome Iginla, and then the Kraken’s captain during this, their inaugural, season. * Mark Giordano, who came to Toronto at the trade deadline for two second-round and one third-round pick. * Owen Tippett, who has not scored his first goal as a Flyer yet, but not for lack of trying. * Ronnie Attard, the aforementioned 23-year-old, who is making his NHL debut tonight. One of the best ways to get the high-end talent that the Flyers need to help them turn things around is through the draft—and the higher you pick the more likely you are to succeed. They’re flirting with a top-five pick in the 2022 entry draft and are giving themselves better odds at jumping up every day, having lost three in a row on the road. Joel Farabee is getting ice as a centerman, an experiment that also seems to be working out pretty well, as does not look out of place in either the defensive or neutral zones and has scored 5 in his last 5. Kevin Hayes is playing well, having missed a large portion of the season with various injuries.
Jack Campbell will return to the crease and Nick Abruzzese will make his NHL debut for the Maple Leafs tonight as they start a four-game road trip in ...
We have liked the way those pairings have gone for us, and yet we do, with Giordano’s arrival, want to get a feel for different things to be prepared for whatever might come our way in the playoffs or down the stretch. We will expect to go back to what we had previously, but we are having daily discussions on it. When I watched him on video and when I got all the reports, that is the biggest thing that stands out: his ability to process the game. You have to respect that on the business side of it and what they are trying to do here. In any of my discussions with him, whether it is doing video or just having a conversation, with some of the questions that he asks, he is just a smart player who I think is going to be able to adjust to that part of the game quickly. There should be other chances to see it in the remaining 13 games, though — and there may be an eye towards resting Spezza and having him ready to play in both games of the difficult back-to-back against the Lightning and Panthers this week on Monday-Tuesday.
Zack MacEwan was seconds away from fighting Wayne Simmonds, but the referees broke it up before they could start swinging punches. Breaking up a fight before it ...
Marner carried the puck all around the back of the net and passed it to Matthews who tipped the puck in cleanly. It became even more of an achievement as their second power play of the game turned into a goal against. The goal clip cuts it off, but at the end of the play, Hayes was incensed against Michael Bunting for reasons that didn’t look entirely clear. For Provorov, this marked his first three-point game of the season. Of course benching Yandle was never going to be the end-all be-all difference that turns the Flyers into a winning team all of the sudden, but it was still a momentous choice to actively end that streak. While I will forgive Simmonds scoring against the Flyers, because he deserves any and all success wherever he goes, I was less happy to see the Maple Leafs take the lead about a minute later. All in all it was a more eventful second period. Ivan Provorov made a smart, quick pass across the length of the net to Hayes, who was wide open and undefended in front of it. Part of it was because Carter Hart made some good saves, but the Maple Leafs had set themselves up well during the power play. In fact, it says a lot about the state of the Flyers’ power play that not letting Ilya Mikheyev score a shorthanded goal felt like an achievement. Either it resolved itself in time or he chose to push himself through it — which maybe isn’t the smartest idea during a pandemic, but what do I know as a humble blogger. I’m just here to recap what the first Yandle-less game this season for the Flyers looked like as they went up against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A 2-2 game in the third period against the Maple Leafs turned into a 6-3 loss for the Flyers on Saturday night. By Jordan Hall.
I’m looking at this game and I’m looking at the mistakes and the opportunities that we fed them." If you're lackadaisical for a second or don’t have that attention to detail, they’re going to put the puck in the back of the net and I learned that tonight." Simmonds won the bout in convincing fashion. Sunday is a possibility for his return. Give MacEwen credit for the courage. Provorov was rewarded after he set up Hayes' game-opening goal earlier in the frame. Hayes was right there on the doorstep to bury it. The 23-year-old had no chance on Matthews' goal. "First game, got the first shift under my belt and felt pretty good for the first two periods. "We all have a job to do; his job is to make saves. "I don’t think that we lost this game because of Carter tonight," Yeo said. Simmonds snuck behind Attard and Nick Seeler and scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1 in the middle frame.
Interim head coach Mike Yeo's Philadelphia Flyers (21-35-11) return home to the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday evening to host Sheldon Keefe's Toronto Maple ...
To pull off an upset of the Maple Leafs in this game, the Flyers will need to be disciplined both in terms of puck management and staying out of the penalty box. The Maple Leafs have posted a 6-3-1 record over the last 10 games and have won four of their last five. Dating back to the NHL All-Star break, Travis Konecny leads the Flyers with 18 points (4g, 14a) in 21 games. The Leafs will visit Tampa on Monday. Saturday's game against the Flyers is a potential "trap game" scenario for Keefe's club. In terms of skaters, the Maple Leafs remain packed with forward skill and depth: Matthews, Mitch Marner, Tavares, Nylander, etc. They'll also need to get more pucks and bodies to the areas below and between the dots and be opportunistic when the Leafs turn the puck over. Defensively, the Leafs rank 17th in the 32-team NHL with a 3.03 goals against average. Patrick Brown could move over to left wing -- or Thompson could play left wing with Brown in the middle -- with Zack MacEwen on the right side. At 5-on-5, only the Florida Panthers (183) have scored more goals than the Maple Leafs (167) this season. The game was highlighted by Auston Matthews notching his 50th goal of the season, Nylander tallying a pair of power play goals (25th and 26th), and John Tavares scoring his 23rd goal of the season. Back on Nov. 10, the Flyers dropped a 3-0 home decision to Toronto. After a scoreless and fairly evenly played first period, the Flyers controlled the majority of the play in the second period but found themselves trailing, 1-0, after a William Nylander goal at the 11:11 mark. On Tuesday in St. Paul, the Flyers lost a 4-1 decision to the Minnesota Wild. The Wild dominated roughly 29 of the opening 40 minutes in building a 4-0 lead.
