Jon Scheyer Will Have the Talent to Win in Year 1 at Duke (CalBearsMaven)

It may be the end of an era for the Blue Devils, but Mike Krzyzewski's successor is already showing his recruiting prowess for next season and beyond.

Filipowski, ranked No. 6 in the SI99, scores at-will in a variety of different ways, but it’s his playmaking ability and vision that could be one of the greatest assets to Scheyer’s offensive scheme next season. “We’re really just gonna focus on maintaining the overall dominance of The Brotherhood. All we wanna do is win.” He scores efficiently on all three levels and could be Duke’s top perimeter defender next season. For perspective, Scheyer has also already landed two of the top guards in the 2023 class in Caleb Foster and Jared McCain. Last summer, Lively led the prestigious Nike EYBL in blocks, swatting away five a game. In January, top junior forward G. G. Jackson told SI that he “was literally shaking” in awe of Krzyzewski as he addressed his team before a game against Syracuse.

North Carolina may not be the absolute No. 1 team in the country right now, but it's been playing as well as the best teams in the country since the calendar turned from February to March. The Tar Heels are a No. 8 seed in the tournament but the quality of play represents a team that does not check in as the No. 29 to No. 32 team in the field of 68. Beating two of the best defensive teams in the NCAA Tournament eliminates the idea that there's some secret to stopping Duke's success, which means the onus is on the coaches and players to be in position to make history. Likely to be a close one -- almost certainly will be a close one -- but Blue Devils by a field goal feels like the number. Duke's expectation is to compete at a high level and be in a position to win two games in the Final Four and do so, and there's plenty of evidence to suggest they've got what it takes. That victory to close the regular season helped North Carolina get on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, and the Tar Heels have not relinquished the momentum. After the Tar Heels spoiled Coach K's final home game with a 94-81 victory on March 5, there will also be an element of revenge at stake.

Final Four winners and losers: UNC and first-year coach Hubert ... (USA TODAY)

Hubert Davis has a chance to become the first coach to win his first NCAA title in his rookie year. Kansas' Bill Self is going for his second title.

As in the loss to UNC at home earlier in March, the Blue Devils had opportunities to put the Tar Heels in a hole during the final minutes of the first half and the start of the second. Having failed to do so, the Blue Devils had to be perfect to combat the Tar Heels' outside shooting and physicality in chasing down second-chance points. The senior has rebounded from his quietest game of the year in the Jayhawks' win against Providence in the Sweet 16 with back-to-back impactful performances. The Jayhawks shot 53.7% from the field and 54.2% from 3-point range (13-of-24). With some top-ranked recruiting classes on the way, Davis has taken the mantle from his predecessor, Roy Williams, and put UNC back near the top of the sport. UNC also drew another outstanding game from forward Armando Bacot, who scored 11 points and pulled down 21 rebounds, 13 coming on the offensive glass.

Duke's loss to arch-rival North Carolina produced a startling scene and the end of Mike Krzyzewski's remarkable career.

But, as Krzyzewski said postgame in a reference to a famous Teddy Roosevelt quote, simply being in the arena is all he could have asked for. He may not want to get caught up in the history, but everyone else will, and they’ll remember this night for as long as people are talking about college basketball. Davis went from some perceiving him as a failure 20 games into his tenure to beating perhaps the sport’s greatest coach ever twice in a month in the two most-anticipated games of the season. Regardless of what happens in Monday’s championship game, this game and this moment will be the one remembered from this tournament forever. He was uninterested in discussing his career or his legacy or even the emotions of it all coming to an end. He stood waiting for the Carolina players to shake hands, which they eventually did after sprinting to celebrate with family and friends.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski didn't ride off into a perfect sunset, but that wasn't his concern after the loss. He was focused on comforting his young team.

Wendell Moore Jr. said it was a "dream" to play for Krzyzewski – the winningest coach in college basketball history. "And you take care of the people who have been committed to you and have believed in you. "You take care of the people you love," Krzyzewski said. "I don't want any of these guys to leave and say, 'I should have made that one free throw; I should have made that one,' " he said. "He loves each and every one of us dearly," Moore said. And then going into the locker room, I've said my entire career that I wanted my seasons to end where my team was either crying tears of joy or tears of sorrow because then you knew that they gave everything. In another moment, Krzyzewski was consoling his team, hurting with them and doing his best to lift their spirits.

The Blue Devils couldn't get past rival UNC in their quest to send Mike Krzyzewski out with a national championship.

At 11:40 p.m., Krzyzewski and Mickie left on the 10th golf cart making trips from the locker room to the bus. The cart whisked the Krzyzewskis back to the locker room, where preparations were underway to head back to the team hotel. The postgame pace of movement in the Superdome hallways was a study in contrast. Always possessing a quick wit, K said to the assemblage of reporters and photographers, “Maybe you can superimpose a sunset.” And when you're in the arena, you're either going to come out feeling great or you're going to feel agony, but you always will feel great about being in the arena. After North Carolina’s press conference ended, Davis boarded a golf cart headed back to the locker room. But, damn, I was in the arena for a long time. The last walk was somber, her left hand in his right, as they followed the players to the locker room. Davis was wildly animated coaching his team, while Krzyzewski was more reserved while directing his team from a stool on the elevated court. Then Carolina gunner Caleb Love closed the thing down with a three at the 28-second mark, giving his team enough points to win. Guard Trevor Keels, who scored 19 points, walked just out of public viewing in the tunnel to the locker room and doubled over sobbing. Center Mark Williams, who had played just 16 minutes due to foul trouble and missed two huge free throws in the final minute, tugged his white jersey up over his eyes.

But in their first and only meeting in the NCAA tournament, Carolina beat Duke. Repeat it ad infinitum. That he did so and Carolina remained doesn’t damage his legacy in the least. And when you’re in the arena, you’re either going to come out feeling great, or you’re gonna feel agony. But without Krzyzewski’s snarl and Krzyzewski’s smile, it won’t be the same. They will ring hollow and disingenuous at the other. So at airport gates and in rental car lines — not to mention the saloons that spilled into the streets of this hard-partying town — the history and the stakes dominated conversation all week. The rivalry will survive, and even thrive, after this unprecedented meeting. Ask each side whom officials perennially and eternally favor, and the answer is swift: The other guys. Because they know the opponent and the stakes. The rivalry is built upon that kind of equal time between supporting your own and dissing the other. It’s just that Duke-Carolina has no peer, and the sport’s pinnacle is the Final Four, where they had never met. The debate now becomes: Is this the most satisfying win among the program’s 2,322 victories over 112 seasons?
