The Edmonton Oilers put an essential 2 points up in the standings against St. Louis Friday night, in a thrilling 6-5 O/T win over the Blues.

Beaten to the puck low and then late returning to the crease to cover his man on the 4-2. Unable to knock down a pass on a fast developing 2-on-1 that resulted in the 4-3. +2 in 18:32. Unlucky to have the puck deflect off his skate on the 5-4. Contributed to the O-zone pressure on the 2-1. Unable to contain the Blues’ cycle on the 5-5. A neat little pass from Yamamoto to Hyman on the 1-0. Earned his other assist on the 1-0 with a takeaway and then a dish off to Yamamoto. Important part of the sequence in the St. Louis end although did not earn an apple on the 2-1. A second assist on the 5-3. Also a helper on the Kane shorty. Knocked down a puck and then funneled the puck to the slot where a waiting McDavid deposited the rebound for the 4-1. But the Oilers best players were the best players on the ice. A huge denial on a dangerous 3rd Period 1-timer off of O’Reilly. Started the sequence with a pass to Ceci on the 5-3.

The three-goal lead shrunk to 5-3 after 40 on goals from Robert Thomas and Brayden Schenn and a late reply from Darnell Nurse. In the third, the hard-charging Blues needed just 8:36 to tie it on goals from Pavel Buchnevich and Ivan Barbashev. I’m happy we got the two points, though.” The Blues and Oilers came into the game in almost the exact same situation, trying to catch the second-place team in their respective division while staving off the teams tracking them down from fourth. “In the LA game we were up 3-1 and it went to the shootout. We have to protect the lead and play smart. “We have to learn how to play properly with the lead,” said Zach Hyman, who scored Edmonton’s first two goals of the game. But, after blowing a 3-1 lead to the Kings last game, and the close call on Friday, there is some work to be done with regards to fending off a comeback in a tight playoff atmosphere. “We found a way to get it done, but there was some sloppy play that needs to get cleaned up. With the LA Kings ahead of them and the Vegas Knights right on their heels, the Oilers (9-2-1 in their last 12), need every point they can get. “I’m pleased that we found a way to get the two points, that’s first and foremost,” said head coach Jay Woodcroft, whose club wilted badly when St. Louis turned up the heat.

Edmonton Oilers go after 9th straight home win with Blues in town (Globalnews.ca)

The Oilers have won eight straight home games. Their best streak is nine, achieved at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Every game is important when you’re getting to this time of the season.” It’s being hard to play against at home, not giving teams anything easy, making every shift count, making it tough on other teams to create offence in here,” said Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers have won eight straight home games.

Edmonton Oilers forwards Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid can reach milestones before the 2021-22 season ends.

He already has three 70-plus assist seasons to his credit, and a fourth would be more than any other player in Oilers history who did not wear No. 99. He already has three 70-plus assist seasons to his credit, and a fourth would be more than any other player in Oilers history who did not wear No. 99. Draisaitl and McDavid have since returned to form and have really hit their stride during the stretch run, recording 18 and 19 points, respectively, over the last 10 games. Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have also followed a V-shaped trajectory.

Oilers must focus on refining defensive approach before playoffs (Sportsnet.ca)

The Edmonton Oilers can score like a Stanley Cup contender, of that there is no doubt. But can you say they can defend like a Cup contender?

Offensively, with McDavid, Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins helming separate lines, the Oilers are a real handful. Draisaitl failed to score his 50th, settling for two assists on a seven-shot night. I have seen them on video,” Woodcroft said the former greats. “I never had the privilege of seeing those guys up close. But after a minute, the Oilers finally got the puck, and at 1:11 of OT they were celebrating a win. Connor McDavid scored his second of the night on an overtime two-on-one with Leon Draisaitl, but might we remind you: Edmonton was given the gift of a poor start by the opposing goalie, and couldn’t get it to the bank. Then this game we were up 4-1 and 5-3, so that’s two leads that got away from us.” Do they have the composure to make an early lead stand up? The Edmonton Oilers can score like a Stanley Cup contender, of that there is no doubt.

* was back between the pipes for the 20th time this season and looking to rebound from the tough situation he was thrown into in Calgary on Saturday, and while I’d say he got the job done, there were too many moments that were pretty scary to watch with there being no better example than the Schenn goal that was 1000% stoppable. Not only that, the Oilers have played very well over the last couple of weeks and that means another opportunity for me to pump the team’s tires. * Brayden Schenn cut the lead to one (4-3) on a goal that Mike Smith absolutely had to have. Buchnevich picked up another goal early (5-4) in the third period after he picked up a loose puck in the middle of the Oilers’ coverage and tucked it into an open net. It wouldn’t be Ben if he didn’t throw in a “Go Oilers”. He’s celebrating tonight by going to the @EdmontonOilers game. * got the Oilers on the board (1-0) after the Blues turned the puck over near their blue line and the Oilers’ forward group turned it around in a hurry with a beautiful passing play. McDavid wasn’t done there, though, as he wrapped the game up in OT (6-5) with a perfect deflection on Draisaitl’s centering pass that he was just barely able to get past Husso. It was the little dose of luck that we desperately needed to get this thing done. Instead, the Blues were able to pick up an early goal to cut the lead to two goals with an early one after the Oilers started the frame back on their heels. So when the Blues eventually tied the game near the midway point of the period, I’d be lying if I said I was surprised since there was nothing about the way the boys were defending to getting saves that led us to believe otherwise. Honestly, it wasn’t pretty and I think we all knew that the Oilers would have to be a whole tighter in the third if they wanted to close out this win. Easily the worst part about the last part of the season is the stress that comes with the hours leading up to puck drop and not knowing what kind of effort you’re going to get from the boys. Moving into the second period, we knew that the Blues were going to come out firing and do what they could to try and pull themselves back into the game after falling into a three-goal hole.

NHL Rumors: Jets, Sabres, Oilers, Predators (The Hockey Writers)

NHL rumors: Jets could make significant offseason changes, Sabres want Anderson to return, Oilers coaching options and Predators like Kessel.

They were open to moving him if he’d asked to be traded and that never took place, leading to speculation he’s happy being a Sabre. Jamie McLennan suggested that even if the Jets get in and lose in the first round, “It just makes sense to change the dynamic of what this team looks like.” Dreger said whether they miss the playoffs or make the playoffs he doesn’t think the team will look the same next season. Darren Dreger noted during an interview on Toronto 1050 that he is necessarily sure what kind of changes might be coming, but they could be significant.

The Day After: The Oilers keep overcoming major problems (their ... (Oilers Nation)

Somehow, someway, they once again managed to steal two points with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl doing their thing in overtime.

For the Oilers, it marked their ninth straight home victory, tying a franchise record. “We’ve got to be able to play in those tight games, those 2-1, 1-0 games, and we got to play in those 6-5 games Because you do see it sometimes. The Blues needed to put together four or five consecutive wins, Perron cautioned, before they could start to feel like they had something going. No matter how you cut it, the Oilers goaltending continues to be a major issue for this club. In Mikko Koskinen’s last 10, he’s also given up 32 goals and a .893. In Smith’s last 10 games, he’s given up 32 goals posting a .880 save percentage. They finished their season series against Edmonton (39-25-5) having lost two of three. At the end of the day, goaltenders are paid to stop the puck and he hasn’t been able to do it well. “You’re not going to stop scoring goals but things are going to tighten up. You got to be able to play in tight games.” During this schedule, we want to see growth.” Their last four games have been nothing short of eventful.
