2022 World Cup draw: What you need to know as Canada discovers ... (Sportsnet.ca)

For the first time in 36 years, the Canadian men's national team will be involved in a World Cup draw. Here is a breakdown of everything you need to know ...

The Canadians will eye that match as the winnable game and then from there, the pressure is on their other two opponents to emerge victorious. If Canada doesn't have Qatar, then it will be behind the 8-ball. All Pot 1 teams will be randomly placed into Groups B to H (Qatar is automatically in Group A as host), then the Pot 2 teams go next and so on. The good news is Canada has nothing to lose at this stage and it is a mentally resilient team. Any of the Pot 2 teams are formidable opponents, so it's a pick-your-poison situation there. The Tunisian defence is excellent at suppressing quality shots, though, conceding 8.23 shots per 90 minutes in all competitions over the last calendar year with an expected goals (xG) allowed of 0.88 per 90. From there, the next eight best-ranked teams are in Pot 2. The Oceania qualifier will face Costa Rica in the other playoff. It might behoove Canada to skip Robert Lewandowski's Poland and a potential dark horse in Serbia as well. The seven best-ranked teams – Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal – make up the rest of Pot 1 with the Qataris. This is a solid side. Those victors will advance to the World Cup and be in Pot 4.

Canada drops in rankings, can expect tougher grouping in Friday's ... (CBC.ca)

Canada is grouped with the lowest-ranked teams for Friday's World Cup draw, which increases the likelihood of facing two of the top 10 teams in the world in ...

This would have increased the probability of Canada being placed into an easier group at the World Cup. The same constraints mean Canada can't be drawn against the CONCACAF-Oceania playoff winner from Pot 4. The geographical restrictions also mean that Canada can't be drawn against fellow CONCACAF nations Mexico and the United States from Pot 2. But Canadian coach John Herdman didn't seem too bothered by the missed opportunity of being placed into Pot 3. "We can go into this World Cup with absolutely no fear," Herdman said. Pot 1 teams are automatically assigned position 1 in each group — so, for instance, Qatar is A1. The positions are important because they determine in what order the teams in each group will face each other. After each team is selected, a second draw will be held to determine the position for each nation within the group. So, for example, South American sides Brazil and Uruguay can't be in the same group. The winner of the European playoff will also clinch a World Cup berth. Pot 1 consists of the hosts Qatar and the top seven ranked teams. But while they finished atop their region, Canada dropped five spots in the world rankings released Thursday, from No. 33 to No. 38. Pot 2 contains the eight teams ranked 9-16, and teams ranked 17-24 are in Pot 3.

What do you think of the possibility of this group? Morocco is ranked 24th in the world, while Qatar is ranked 51st (For reference, Canada is currently ranked 38th). If this scenario actually happens, there is a strong possibility Canada progresses to the knockout stages. 4) All the groups – A through H – can have no more than one team from each region, except for UEFA. The maximum limit for European teams per group is two. Peru) play-off, and the winner of the CONCACAF vs. For those who are interested, I generated a list of the pots (seen below) and had Excel randomly draw a country from each pot. World Cup Draw Time, TV and Rules (The New York Times)

The hard work of qualifying is over. Now the teams headed to Qatar later this year will learn their opponents.

What Would Qualify as Success? Serbia has never made it beyond the group stage as Serbia, so that will be the first target. The presence of Spain and Germany makes that a touch less likely. What to Expect The problem for Japan, as it has been for countless previous tournaments, is goals. But as the World Cup draws closer, that absence of varied competition leads to a sense of ignorance. If things go to form, France, England, Portugal, Belgium and one of Spain and Germany are all on one side of the draw. But the group stage draw is not really a draw just for the group stage: It is a road map for the entire tournament, too. Group H is an appetizing one, and perhaps the most finely balanced of all eight. After all the pomp and the circumstance, the video montages and the marketing spiel dressed up as mission statements, all you can say with any certainty is that it will, when it comes, be colorful. Brazil, as it happens, is in much the same boat. Japan will be no pushover, and whichever of Costa Rica or New Zealand fills out the group will hardly be content to go quietly. Senegal, the most complete team Africa has sent to a tournament for more than a decade, may lie in wait in the last 16. Louis van Gaal said it all with just the hint of a playful smile.

USA World Cup draw scenarios 2022: Best and worst case scenario ... (Sporting News)

With the U.S. set to be pulled from Pot 2 in the upcoming 2022 World Cup draw, what are the best and worst possible results for Gregg Berhalter and company?

1 1 1 1 Despite a FIFA ranking of No. 18, Wales is possible to qualify in Pot 4 through the yet undecided UEFA playoff path. Finally, out of Pot 4, an Ecuador side that drew with Argentina and Brazil in World Cup qualifying and picked up wins over Uruguay and Colombia would be a very difficult opponent. Senegal is the highest-ranked team in Pot 3, and it's no secret why. Gareth Southgate has fostered a strong, cohesive group with talented players that would present a unique and difficult opponent for the U.S. After that, a pull of the lowest ranked team in Pot 3 in Tunisia would be a kind result. Therefore, any team joining Qatar in Group A is not facing a true Pot 1 team. For any team included in Pots 2-4, like the United States, a draw in Group A is where any best-case scenario begins. Gregg Berhalter stated that the first goal for the U.S. is to get out of the group, and if the squad looks beyond that, it risks an early letdown.
