2023 Toyota GR Corolla First Look: The Most Powerful, Jaw ... (Motor Trend)

Long the compact segment's "safe" choice, the Corolla morphs into a turbocharged, AWD, manual-transmission hot hatchback.

Further evidence this isn't a stripped-down, street-legal race car: All GR Corollas come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, another feature coming to all Corollas in the future. Sakamoto would also like to point out that while the GR Corolla is very capable off-road, it has been designed and tuned for the racetrack. All of this gear is bolted to a more conventional platform than the GR Yaris, which uses a mash-up of Toyota's TNGA-B and TNGA-C small car platforms. Circuit Edition cars also get a forged carbon-fiber roof said to save literal "ounces." Naturally, more lightweighting was possible, but Toyota wanted to keep the price in check. Extra bracing is also installed in the floor to get the standard Corolla Hatchback chassis stiff enough for track duty. Braking is handled by four-piston fixed calipers on 14-inch vented and slotted rotors in front and two-piston fixed calipers on 11.7-inch vented rotors in the rear. Like the GR Yaris, the GR Corolla's all-wheel-drive system can be set to 60/40 (street), 50/50 (track), or 30/70 (off-road) front/rear torque split to match the surface and the driving style. Yes, that means the GR Corolla will only be offered with a six-speed manual transmission and Toyota's new high-performance, adjustable-torque-split GR-Four all-wheel-drive system. Toyota credits some of the power gain to a more efficient exhaust system with a three-piece, three-tip muffler. The engine is otherwise similar to the unit in the GR Yaris, port- and direct-injected with a ball-bearing turbo integrated into the exhaust manifold, big exhaust valves, and piston-cooling oil squirters. As we've heard before, the boss has very strong feelings about how a sports car should feel, and he wanted the GR Corolla to feel like a street-legal rally car. Now boosted to 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, what was already the most powerful production three-cylinder engine in the world is even more so, making an extra 43 hp and 8 lb-ft in this tune.

2023 Toyota GR Corolla: 10 Design Features We Like (Car and Driver)

The GR Corolla packs more than just a different powertrain relative to its standard-issue hatchback sibling.

Poking out of the GR Corolla's bespoke rear fascia is a model-specific triple-pipe exhaust system. Along with lessening the car's mass, the carbon-fiber roof panel also helps lower the GR Corolla's center of gravity. If you opt for the Circuit Edition, Toyota fits its hot hatch with a bulging hood that includes a pair of vents. The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla not only packs the most powerful punch of any variant of the Japanese automaker's compact car, but it also features the most aggressive design cues of any Corolla sold today. Like 2.4 inches wider than the Corolla hatchback it's based on. The GR Corolla isn't just notably more powerful than your run-of-the-mill Corolla, it's also a good deal wider.

The hot hatchback will be available in Core grade and the limited-run Circuit Edition, the latter boasting a forged carbon roof.

Interestingly, the GR Corolla will also come standard with radar-based adaptive cruise control, a rarity for a vehicle with three pedals. Toyota doesn't skimp on safety tech with the GR Corolla and the hot hatchback comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver aid tech. The Circuit Edition rolls in standard JBL premium audio, navigation and Qi-compatible wireless phone charging, but the Core grade can also be so-upgraded with a Technology package. The GR Corolla can also be upgraded with Torsen limited-slip differentials on the front and rear axles as part of the Performance Package upgrade. Measuring 72.9 inches wide, the GR Corolla is nearly 2.5 inches wider than the standard Corolla hatchback courtesy of an aggressive wide body makeover. WIth the twist of a dial, drivers can go from a 60:40 front-to-rear torque distribution suitable for daily driving to a 50:50 split for maximum stability and on to a rear-biased 30:70 distribution for dynamic driving on back roads and circuits.

The Toyota GR Corolla is a high-performance hatchback - CNN (CNN)

The Toyota Corolla became world's best-selling car mostly because it's inexpensive, efficient and practical. Exciting? Maybe not that.

The base version will be called Core, and a better equipped Circuit Edition will be offered during the first year of production, which is slated to start later this year. The GR Corolla's four-wheel-drive system was developed in and for rally races, according to Toyota. The engine in the GR Yaris produces slightly less horsepower. The car's front and rear fenders extend out from the body giving the car a wide stance for improved handling and allowing for wide performance tires. The GR Corolla has a variable all-wheel-drive system that allows the driver to select how much power goes to the back or the front wheels. No automatic transmission of any kind is offered on the car.

The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla Is a 300-HP 3-Cylinder Hot Hatch (Autoweek)

We dive into the details of the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla three-cylinder hatchback and look at its specifications, features, and competitive set.

Do you think the Toyota GR Corolla will scratch the hot hatch itch? Now, this Corolla will be a jolt to the Toyota lineup, while giving the sport compact and hot hatch world a new competitor. The GR Corolla also nets you adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. The GR Corolla is designed for fun but still comes with driver-assistance tech. The standard GR Corolla doesn’t get the special roof but does see an aluminum hood. The G16E-GTS engine, as Toyota calls it internally, is exclusively mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which then feeds the GR-Four all-wheel-drive system.

With a turbo three-cylinder, massive slotted disc brakes, and variable-torque-split AWD, this hot hatch came to party.

But, in France, the GR Yaris retails for 37,600 euros, more than double the cost of a base Yaris. Using the same exchange rate and model upgrade, that would see a Canadian GR Corolla start at somewhere just north of $40,000. And what a Corolla it is. It’s worth noting that Toyoda, despite now being CEO, still has a hand in all of this, reportedly testing the breathed-on Corolla at the Fuji Speedway and Suzuka. In 2007, he wanted to drive in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. As it couldn’t be an “official” Toyota effort, the team was called Gazoo Racing. But it was entirely staffed by Toyota employees, with Toyoda himself, thanks to the strict dictums of corporate Japan, having to race under an alias — “Morizo.” Article content Article content

Toyota accidentally posted some photos and details early about a new 2023 sports car that it planned to reveal Thursday night. The internet is abuzz.

Users of the social site liked the hatchback's expected 300-horsepower engine, carbon roof and triple exhaust pipes. Car and Driver also spotted the leaked Corolla details and highlighted, "the new performance model has AWD and a 300-hp version of the turbo 1.6-liter three-cylinder from the GR Yaris," a sports car released in 2021 that was not made available in the United States. Toyota planned to unveil its new Gazoo Racing sports car at 9:30 p.m. EDT Thursday. But information about the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla apparently hit the automaker's website early Thursday, according to the Motor Authority website.

2023 Toyota GR Corolla Debuts Today: See The Livestream (Motor1)

At long last, Toyota is giving the Corolla the Gazoo Racing treatment. Watch the world premiere of the hot hatchback as it happens.

On a related note, an eight-speed automatic transmission is currently in the works for the GR Yaris. However, it's too soon to say whether it will eventually be adopted by the GR Corolla as well. It won't be the brand's only AWD performance hatch since the not-for-America GR Yaris has been around for a while. Rumors of a GR Corolla have been swirling around the Internet for close to four years, but it's only today Toyota will give its compact hatchback the Gazoo Racing treatment.

Toyota's highly strung Honda Civic Type R rival uses uprated version of GR Yaris's acclaimed powertrain.

More details will be given at the debut later tonight. Power is sent to both axles through a six-speed manual gearbox, as in the GR Yaris, with an IMT (intelligent manual transmission) function which essentially serves as a rev matching function for smoother downshifts. The new Toyota GR Corolla will be officially revealed overnight, but new details published early by Toyota US confirm it will use a heavily uprated version of the Toyota GR Yaris's powertrain.

I Find The Toyota GR Corolla Funny For One Reason (Jalopnik)

I've been a fan of small, sporty Toyotas ever since my buddy told me about riding around California as a kid in his dad's 1980s FX16, a twin-cam hot hatch ...

This in and of itself is not all that humorous. After all, making a 300-HP hot hatchback is not endemic to Subaru. There are plenty of VWs and Fords that have been doing the exact same job for years, with AWD and not, looking all about the same, going about as fast, costing as much, on and on. It all started this morning when we first saw the leaked photos and specs of the car. You want to be a fast driver and improve your not-yet-mad skills in a truly capable, but friendly car. You’re a fast driver looking for a car you can wring the last drop of performance from, rewarding your mad skills. So I’m not mad that there’s a new 300-horsepower Toyota GR Corolla hot hatchback, I just find one coincidence funny.

There are two GR Corolla models: the base Core and the more premium Circuit Edition, which will only be sold for the vehicle's launch year.
