NASA also has a page dedicated to space weather with a cool Aurora Forecast map showing the probability of seeing the lights. The northern lights may appear over parts of Toronto in the next few days thanks to solar flares.

Coronal mass ejections are defined by the agency as “large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun’s corona.” The National and Oceanic Atmospheric Administration issued a “geomagnetic storm watch” on Tuesday, in response to a “coronal mass ejection” that is set to reach Earth’s atmosphere late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

During the peak of a solar cycle, when sunspots are more numerous, G3 storms may occur a couple of times per month. The Space Weather Prediction Center data indicated potential strong radio blackouts occurred over North and South America. The flare was also likely associated with a new CME, which forecasters are currently analyzing to determine if it is directed towards Earth for another potential lightshow. If the orientation of the incoming CME isn’t quite right, there still may be some impact but just not as much, he said. In this case, Young explained, Earth’s magnetic field at the front is oriented northward, or up and down. Outside of cloud coverage, light interference from the moon should be minimal, as a new moon appears Friday. Appearing as a dark spot, a sunspot is a region where the magnetic field is particularly strong on the sun. This would be most prevalent in the Arctic and Antarctic. Space junk and satellites in low Earth orbit can experience increased drag, and various issues with high-frequency radios and GPS signals can be expected. “Because these two have merged together or are merging together, that’s often an indication that the CME will be a bit stronger. Moving at around 2 million miles per hour (841 km/s), this CME is expected to catch up with the first CME and merge into one — what scientists call a cannibal CME. When the magnetic field lines tangle or cross, it can cause an explosion of energy called a solar flare. Here's the southward extent of aurora for a Kp=7 storm, which is possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

So my advice is to forget about tonight as a northern lights possibility across Michigan and the Great Lakes region. Friday evening gives the Great Lakes and Northeast an even better chance of seeing the northern lights. And keep Friday night in the back of your mind. You’ll have to go to the clear skies to see northern lights. The forecasters only get two data points with which to forecast northern lights. Thursday evening gives parts of the Great Lakes a better chance at having clearing skies. So forget about seeing the northern lights in any part of Detroit or Chicago. You’ll need to get out into the country- the farmland west of Detroit and the farmland west of Chicago. At the southern edge of northern lights viewing, you should try to find a high spot with a great view of the northern horizon. Dark places along a Great Lake’s shoreline could be great spots to see northern lights. When the Kp is 7, northern lights are likely over northern latitudes along the U.S. border. But the northern U.S. is still in a winter pattern. Northern lights could be viewed as far south as Detroit, the southern Michigan border, Chicago, central New York State and Des Moines, IA. There is also a fairly good chance of northern lights visible several hundred miles south of the Canada border.

Last night in Southeast Saskatchewan many were out to take in the Northern Lights, including Mailyn Berer of Ogema. Coming from the Philippines, Mailyn was especially excited as this is only her second time viewing the beautiful spectacle. Joined by family and friends, Mailyn was able to watch the dancing lights right outside her house in Ogema between 9 and 10 pm last night.

If the conditions are good and you’ve found a solid lookout spot, remember to have patience. In the years closest to solar maximum (slated to happen in 2024), the shows are more frequent, energetic, and colorful (whereas they’re more lethargic in the years near solar minimum). For your best chance, find an area, like the top of a hill, where you can have unobstructed sky views to the north. When the particles mix with oxygen, green and red lights appear; they glow blue and purple when they join with nitrogen. However, it’s more probable that if the dancing display happens in the continental U.S., it’ll be seen in the northern parts of Washington, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine. It also means that there’s a larger swath of the hemisphere that could potentially see the aurora.
