Canadiens Center Dvorak's Place on Roster Safe for Now (The Hockey Writers)

It's safe to say Montreal Canadiens forward Christian Dvorak's got the confidence of interim head coach Martin St. Louis.

After 10 years of writing hockey, Ryan decided it was as good a time as any to actually join The Hockey Writers for the 2014-15 season. For where the Habs are on their timetable to contention again, he does the job… Bergevin still shouldn’t have let negotiations get to the point he would be offered one, but, alas, what’s done is done and Dvorak is a Hab, conceivably for the foreseeable future. Just much less flattering to Dvorak if he’s being looked at under the lens of defensive effectiveness, if he does end up being pushed down the lineup. He went on record saying he wanted to keep playing an offensive role with the Habs. Re-signing him to such a long-term, rich deal made little sense with Kotkaniemi still in the fold (he’d only go on to sign the Hurricanes offer sheet a month after Danault left). By all appearances, Kotkaniemi and Suzuki were the future top two centers of the team at the time (even if Bergevin couldn’t admit it). And giving that much money to a third-liner would have been a huge gamble. Of course, there’s a logical cause-and-effect connection at work when, literally the same day Kotkaniemi officially becomes a Carolina Hurricane, Dvorak becomes a Hab. Nevertheless, there was a school of thought that Dvorak was brought in to replace Phillip Danault, as the team’s resident shutdown specialist, just with more offensive pop. It’s just that, after he scored 31 points in 56 games with the Arizona Coyotes in what was a modest career season for him in 2020-21, many had hoped the now-26-year-old would be on the verge of an offensive breakthrough. Keep in mind, the Habs just traded away Artturi Lehkonen as a pending restricted free agent, in part out of cap cosideration. Not only was Dvorak on the ice in the final minute of the Canadiens’ weekend loss to the New Jersey Devils. He set up Rem Pitlick for the dramatic game-tying goal to help the Habs earn a point in their eventual 3-2 shootout loss. But he realistically wasn’t going to break the bank on his next deal. In the interest of fairness though, the 20 points (nine goals) he’s scored in 41 games are in line with his career average up to this point. Evidently, what you saw in Dvorak was what you got: a short-term upgrade on Jesperi Kotkaniemi. That in and of itself isn’t necessarily an issue.

About Last Night: Ain't no sunshine for Habs in Florida (Montreal Gazette)

The Montreal Canadiens erased a 4-1 deficit in the second period, but came up short 7-4 to the Florida Panthers Tuesday at FLA Live Arena.

Likely show casing him to move him in off season. So far during St. Louis’s time as coach, the team has competed most nights and made losses palatable. In the coming seasons, Habs fans will be looking for long-term progress: young players winning jobs and reaching their potential. There’s potentially a lot of losing coming in the near future. And just over a minute after that, Christian Dvorak completed the improbable comeback with a one-timer that found some space through Sergei Bobrovsky before hitting the back of the net. Lomberg beat Allen glove side to give Florida a 2-1 lead headed into Period 2. Article content Article content Article content Article content Article content Article content

He will have one slide-eligible season next season should he return to junior.

Updates from practice - March 30 (NHL.com)

Jordan Harris talks about signing with the Habs, while Justin Barron reflects on his first NHL point.

"Suzy kind of knew right away on the ice. "It was a pretty easy assist. It was definitely pretty special," said Barron, who was acquired from Colorado at the trade deadline. I've already picked up a lot of stuff," explained Harris. "Obviously the way that Kent sees the team moving forward, possessing the puck, playing fast, everything like that, it just seemed like a good fit." That was the plan the whole way, to sign with Montreal after four years. Getting my degree was super important to me, and going back for that senior year, we had a great team at Northeastern and all my best friends are there," mentioned Harris. "The only time where there was a little time for reflection was when some of the organization members got let go."
