Hogs send Gonzaga to the showers, seek to do the same to Coach ... (Fayetteville Flyer)

The victory over Gonzaga cannot be minimized. It's simply one of the biggest wins in Razorback basketball history.

Duke will be a difficult matchup for the Hogs with their size, talent and depth. The surprise offensive hero of the game was Trey “Big Game” Wade with 15 points and 7 rebounds. The Bulldogs led the nation in field-goal shooting at 52.6 percent, but the Razorbacks locked them down to just 37.5 percent for the game. Stanley Umude was strapped with foul trouble, but he hit three key baskets for 6 points and an assist. He topped Derek Hood, who previously held the record at 349 in 1999. Hood, who was 6-9, is second on the list with 1,015 rebounds. However, it was Coach K’s Blue Devils who stopped the Hogs in their 1990 surprise run to the Final Four at Denver when Todd Day, Lee Mayberry, and Oliver Miller were sophomores. His fellow All-American freshman Chet Holmgren was even more effective when on the court with his 7-1 length, but Arkansas sent him to the showers with 11 points and 5 fouls after 23 minutes of playing time. He set a new Arkansas single-season rebounding record of 354 rebounds and counting. It’s simply one of the biggest victories in Razorback basketball history. Maybe? However, no one would be questioning Mark Few’s Bulldogs if they had advanced with a four-point win over the Hogs, so it’s futile to question that now. Krzyzewski, 75, announced earlier in the year that he would retire after 42 years as the head coach of the Blue Devils when this season concludes.

This is (March) Madness! Top seeds Gonzaga and Arizona are toppled (WYPR)

Jaylin Williams of the Arkansas Razorbacks celebrates with head coach Eric Musselman after defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs 74-68 in the Sweet Sixteen round game ...

That's leaves Kansas as the only No. 1 seed left. The Bulldogs were the No. 1 overall seed and last year's runner-up. • First, Gonzaga was dispatched by the No. 4 seed Arkansas: 74-68. The Jayhawks take on No. 4 seed Providence on Friday night. Add to that Baylor, yet another No. 1 seed, which was knocked out earlier in the round of 32. • The Razorbacks, on the other hand, went in to this matchup against the No. 1 team in the land with a dismal record: 2 wins; 11 losses.

Three takeaways a day after Gonzaga's Sweet 16 loss to Arkansas (The Seattle Times)

SAN FRANCISCO — Nursing a foot injury, NBA star Stephen Curry stayed back in the Bay Area this week as his Golden State Warriors traveled to road games, ...

Few interjected before any of his players could tackle the question: “I just think it’s too raw to be dealing with stuff like that. On Senior Night, Bolton and Nembhard were noncommittal when asked if they’d weighed the possibility of coming back. “You know what, it was their night, and you got to give them credit for winning the game,” Timme said. Timme also ranks No. 1 in Gonzaga history when it comes to career field goals made in the NCAA tournament with 74, surpassing Morrison’s record of 58, along with free throws made, with 43. It’s possible, but not highly probable, the three players who sat on the postgame podium Thursday night will each be back in Gonzaga uniforms next season. It’s also plausible that all three — Timme, Nembhard and Bolton — will move on to the next stage of their basketball careers. Arkansas locked up one of the nation’s best point guards in Nembhard. The Razorbacks mitigated the damage of a potential No. 1 NBA draft pick, limiting Chet Holmgren in a game where the freshman eventually fouled out. Gonzaga is always on playing somebody in that conference (on TV).” We wanted them to feel bodies,” Musselman said. Gonzaga’s inconsistent shot-making may have been the top offensive deficiency on Thursday, but it wasn’t the only one. “They just, unfortunately, didn’t drop and we had some good looks, but these guys have put their incredible amount of work in, and like I said, don’t really need to hang their head or second guess. Many of Gonzaga’s offensive shortcomings were self-inflicted, but Arkansas played hard, unrelenting, handsy defense that didn’t soften up until the final buzzer sounded.

Notae, Arkansas muscle top overall seed Gonzaga out of NCAAs (Marshall Independent)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — JD Notae scored 21 points despite missing 20 shots and fourth-seeded Arkansas made Gonzaga miserable on both ends of the floor, ...

Arkansas: Musselman coached both the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings in the 2000s, so this was a homecoming of sorts. The Zags shot 37.5% and went 5 of 21 from 3-point range. Toney converted a three-point play with 8:36 left by going right at Holmgren to draw his fourth foul and send him to the bench. Moments after Au’Diese Toney dunked with 1 second left, Notae threw the game ball into the air in triumph as teammate Jaylin Williams flexed and roared near midcourt. Arkansas continually challenged 7-foot Gonzaga freshman Chet Holmgren in the paint, and the skinny NBA prospect fouled out with 3:29 remaining after some questionable calls went against him. Coach Mark Few’s squad was undefeated last year before falling to Baylor in the national title game.

Brian Straus was in Mexico City, where the USMNT battled to a draw with Mexico in World Cup qualifying. “I’d put my hand on the steering wheel, and then he'd slap on a quick-drying cast made of something like Fiberglas. I paid for it, though. Overtime periods were only 10 minutes long at that time and wouldn’t be extended to 20 minutes until the 1948 playoffs. “My regular doctor had put a plaster of Paris cast on my arm. Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine was born on this day in 1966. … The Buccaneers now have two players named after the same two NBA legends. (The Jayhawks play Providence tonight for a spot in the Elite Eight.) It was the first time since 1995 that two No. 1 seeds went down on the same day in Sweet 16 play. Ken Pomeroy’s statistical formula ranks the Cougars as the No. 2 team in the country (behind Gonzaga) and they lived up to their reputation last night. The Cougars’ impressive showing last night has them favored over the higher-seeded Villanova in that matchup. They led wire-to-wire on the way to winning 72–60, thanks to some smothering defense. The Zags’ defeat was the more surprising of the two. But with Holmgren on the bench, the Bulldogs couldn’t mount a comeback.
