'Dune' Producer Mary Parent on Director Denis Villeneuve's Vision ... (Hollywood Reporter)

The two-time Oscar nominee looks back at developing the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel.

He had such a vision of who these people were, what this journey was, the world-building, how all of that intertwined and how he was going to actually realize this in a way that was accessible. The more storytelling and the more things that can get made — and particularly the harder projects and the stories that people are afraid of — I’m glad that there is an outlet for that. This story first appeared in a March stand-alone issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. I was thrilled to see Dune on the big screen, but many people may have watched it when it premiered on HBO Max. As a producer known for making big-screen spectacles, what are your thoughts about streaming? We have to make sure that we are delivering great stories. There are too many other forms of entertainment where you don’t have to make that investment. We have seen many, many films about an alien invasion, and I was so blown away by how real he made it — how he dramatized the aliens and the emotionality of it. I literally read an article where he said, “Dune is my dream project.” We sat down, and it was clear right away that he had a burning desire and a very clear vision of how he was going to approach this. Denis was one of just a handful of people that I immediately thought of. Ironically, as hard as the first part of the mountainous climb was on Dune, it got really easy. Kong (2021), says that the ambitious task of adapting Dune was an arduous process that faced a lot of industry skepticism. I started really tracking the rights and watching what was happening.

Denis Villeneuve on 'Dune's 10 Oscar Nominations, Why He'll Never ... (Collider.com)

Dune director Denis Villeneuve reveals why fans will never see any deleted scenes, how the script for Dune 2 is written, and the10 Oscar nominations.

I believe that each movie has a length that it should have, and that movie has the length, the perfect length for the story we're telling. One of the many things I love about Matt Reeves's, Batman, is that it's a three-hour movie, and the box office success shows people will watch it. Now I could envision a third movie and to make the adaptation of Dune Messiah that will complete Paul Atreides's story that I think would make sense. But Dune, when we wrote the screenplay, and I was reading the screenplay in my mind, it was like the movie that should last between 2:20 and 2:30. It was the deal I had made with everybody. VILLENEUVE: At the beginning my commitment was to make a movie that was around two hours and 30 minutes or a little bit under because my previous movie, which had been Blade Runner 2049 was close to three hours, and I reassured everybody, saying that I would. The first one, it was more to make sure that we will land in the world and that the movie will be accepted. VILLENEUVE: I would say that first of all, I don't like the word sequel for the part two, because it's really like a second part. There's so many people working hard to make a movie and so many money invested, so of course it's a relief to know that the movie was well received. Hmm. I think it would be Incendies, because it's the first time that I directed a movie where I did feel that I was more in control of the language and that the style of the movie felt like I finally arrived home. It's really the second part of a bigger story, and I'm entirely 100% focused on that second part. I'm focusing on the second part right now which brings a lot of anxiety, so I don't have the time to really fully receive and appreciate that. Before it was more experiments, but Incendies was the first time that I made a movie that I was like, I found my ground.
