Mike Smith ready to step up for Edmonton Oilers' stretch drive (Globalnews.ca)

Edmonton Oilers goalie Mike Smith will be back in net Thursday night when the team hosts the Buffalo Sabres.

“I think that’s the makings of a good line — a big, hard, heavy, cycle-driven line. Puljujarvi practised Wednesday on a line with Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman. That moved Ryan McLeod down to play with Josh Archibald and Zack Kassian. “There are just so many games in a short period of time,” he said. “Jesse is a top six player. He said after practice on Wednesday that he’s not worried about the past and is instead focused on creating a healthy competition with Koskinen. “Having only one or two people injured instead of five or six people injured certainly is going to make a difference.”

Evander Kane had a pair of goals and the Edmonton Oilers limped to a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday after having an early 3-0 advantage.

The Red Wings came roaring back with a pair of goals 34 seconds apart early in the third period. The Oilers got off to a quick start with three goals before Detroit got its first shot. Notes: Out with injuries for the Red Wings were without Robby Fabbri (knee), Danny DeKeyser (undisclosed), Carter Rowney (lower body) and Mitchell Stephens (lower body). OILERS NOTES: Kane has come as advertised in role as top-six ... (Edmonton Sun)

Winger Evander Kane has been the Edmonton Oilers' trade-deadline rental, only a player who came two months early and it didn't cost them any assets.

“I have a lot time and respect for Tyler. I had him for four years but with some of the people coming back (from injury), he’s been put on waivers and we’ll see what happens. Oilers Should Avoid a Trade Deadline Deal With the Red Wings (The Hockey Writers)

The 2022 Trade Deadline is fast approaching and the Edmonton Oilers are looking around the league at possible trade partners and players that could fit ...

There’s no point in forcing a deal for a goaltender if a fair offer doesn’t present itself while the Oilers have Stuart Skinner in the minors as an option to back up. The final possibility is if the Oilers were looking at a goaltender in Thomas Greiss to back up Mikko Koskinen. At this point Koskinen is the starter, so they will be possibly looking to add a 1B or a backup for him to close out the season and be able to start fresh in the summer. If you thought that deal was bad for Holland, he made one even worse as a member of the Red Wings in an attempt to grab a defenceman before the deadline in 2012. The Red Wings don’t have many players, if any, who would fit in the Oilers’ lineup and fill a need. Gagner is still with the Red Wings producing and being a valued leader in the locker room for a young team, while both the second-round picks look to be solid future NHL players in Brock Faber and Aatu Raty. On the Oilers’ side, Holland hoped he was bringing over a goalscorer in Athanasiou, who broke out for 30 goals the previous season. The 2022 Trade Deadline is fast approaching and the Edmonton Oilers are looking around the league at possible trade partners and players that could fit their needs.
