Center Nico Sturm is the newest member of the Colorado Avalanche after a trade that sent center Tyson Jost to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.
Sturm, 26, has nine goals, eight assists with a minus-5 rating in 53 games this season for the Wild, mostly on the fourth line. The native of Germany was signed as a college free agent out of Clarkson in 2019. The Avalanche, who are firmly in control of first place in the Central Division, acquired veteran defenseman Josh Manson on Monday in a trade with Anaheim.
The Colorado Avalanche have traded Tyson Jost to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Nico Sturm ahead of the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline.
The Wild sit in third place in the Central Division with 72 points and also have high hopes for the 2021-22 season. Rather than negotiating a new deal and hoping things would work out in favor of the team, the Wild instead opted to go younger with more certainty in the immediate future beyond this season. That’s a fairly significant drop-off for the Wild, though they do get an extra year out of Jost at a very reasonable cap hit to see if a change of scenery will help him to elevate his role in a new system.

His defensive play is/was pretty good, but he wasn’t a good enough faceoff man and he was part of a PK unit close to last in the league. He came out of North Dakota with a big reputation and was a first-round pick. He’s a true pro, never once whined about a thing here and was very active in the community. He had 11 goals last year in his rookie season, and had nine goals and 17 points in 53 games this season for the Wild. He’s only 26. Sturm added two points (1g/1a) in seven playoff contests and led the team in plus/minus rating (+1) during the postseason. He finished the regular season tied for fourth on the team in goals and tied for fifth in plus/minus rating.

Avalanche and Jost part ways; Colorado clears more cap room.
The Avalanche freed up 1.275M dollars in space by trading Jost for Sturn. Nico Sturm, traded to COL, has put up very solid results in quite sheltered fourth-line minutes. The Avs need to be better at winning draws when on the kill. Sturm also brings the ability to win more at the faceoff dot, something the Avalanche desperately needed. Avs fans will miss him and Tyson Tuesdays. A change of scenery may be just what the young man needs.
