Defenceman Ben Chiarot will be leaving Montreal to play for the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Tyler Smilanic and two draft picks.
“If they get a couple more pieces in here in the summer, maybe have some young guys take another step, it’s a team that’s going to be competitive here right away, I think.” “I don’t think it’s quite as emotional if it just comes out of the blue for some guys, but I’ve known this was coming so I’ve had time to accept that.” “There’s not one specific player that we’re saying, `Hey, we have to move on right now,’ other than we’ve said publicly before, we’ll trade Jeff Petry if we can, given the family situation,” Hughes said. “We’re pursuing opportunities to give us salary cap flexibility,” Hughes said. “ (Florida) didn’t have their first-round pick this year but in reality, even with other teams we were asking for a 2023 first-round pick,” Hughes said. Hughes admitted to still be working on the possibility to ease his team’s cap flexibility.

The difference between the second pair and the third pair is the difference between a roster spot in most multi-cat leagues and a roster spot in the deepest of multi-cat leagues. For this year, it clears a spot on the blue line for more Alex Romanov minutes. As for his engagement, I remember the same issues brought up with Arthur Kaliyev and he's an NHL regular for a playoff team now. He also tends to back off the blue line, preferring to grind out the game along the boards or in front of the net. But there are 21 minutes a night available if he takes Gustav Forsling's spot on the second pair, and that's where things get interesting. He certainly won't be on the top pair, so we can forget about 23-24 minutes a night.

The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenceman Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Tyler Smilanic, a first round pick in 2023, and a fourth round pick in 2022.
The Panthers acquired Ben Chiarot from the Canadiens on Wednesday, taking a big defensive name off the trade market as Monday's deadline looms.
The 2023 draft is considered a deeper one than the 2022 edition set for Montreal this summer. Chiarot is in the last year of his contract ahead of unrestricted free agency this summer. But with Florida, Chiarot won't have to play top-pairing minutes, as he averaged a career-high 23:33 per game this season.
The Canadiens acquire Tyler Smilanic and draft picks in exchange for the veteran defenseman.
The defenseman recorded 46 points in 164 games with Montreal. Smilanic, a left-handed forward, recorded 22 points (13 goals, 9 assists) in 38 games in his second season with Quinnipiac University in the NCAA. The 6'1'' and 177 lbs centerman ranked second on the team in goals (tied with Oliver Chau). A Denver, CO native, Smilanic was selected in the third round (74th overall) by the Panthers in the 2020 NHL Draft. The Canadiens will retain 50% of Chiarot's salary for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.
In an exclusive interview with Sportsnet's Eric Engels, Ben Chiarot has expressed his willingness to come back with the Canadiens this summer.
I think their style of play also suits playing here in that they love to play and love to put on a show. I think people here have a lot to look forward to with those two guys steering the ship going forward. I see a passing of the torch from Shea and Carey to Nick. That’s how I see it going, and I can’t think of someone better suited for it considering how mature he is and how he handles himself. BC: Absolutely! I’ve loved my time in Montreal. Nothing but good things to say about the team and the city. With Chiarot slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, he will likely get a decent raise from his current $3.5 million salary. This is a player who loved playing in Montreal and gave it his all every game.
