Players 2022: The (short) case for every contender heading into ... (GolfDigest.com)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH — A wet and wild (and cold and windy and just plain crazy) week at TPC Sawgrass is finally set to come to an end on Monday (!).

Has a high finish of T-40 this season and entered this week off a 76-82 weekend at Bay Hill. Most importantly, is the solo leader. Showed some huge stones last month at Pebble Beach, where he birdied 11, 14, 16 and 17 on the final day to hold off Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay for his first PGA Tour win. Grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, which would explain why the weather hasn't affected him in the slightest this week. By far the hottest player on the course at the time of the suspension of play due to darkness Sunday night. Bermudagrass putting specialist (currently eighth in the field in SG/putting). Briefly earned the "hottest player in the world" designation thanks to two tour wins between last May and last October (Valspar, Sanderson), plus a pair of runner-ups in that span, too. The 2017 U.S. Amateur runner-up (and 2018 Ben Hogan Award winner) was in one of the final pairings a year ago in this same event. Has one PGA Tour win, a victory in a playoff over Sungjae Im at the 2019 Sanderson Farms. A prolific winner on the DP World Tour. Also a back-to-back winner at the Valspar Championship, where he could win for a third time next week. Should be able to clean up a four-footer for par at No. 10 on Monday morning and then gets the par-5 11th, where he could potentially get within one. Will have 15 feet for birdie when he restarts his third round at the par-5 11th on Monday. Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas are all sticking around for Monday's marathon, but Thomas is the only one who could even be described as "lurking" at four under (five off the current lead). Had casual golf watchers popped in on Sunday to check the coverage, there's a decent chance they wouldn’t know a single name near the very top of the leader board.

Anirban Lahiri Atop Crowded Leaderboard with Busy Monday ... (Sports Illustrated)

Seventeen players are within four shots of the lead on a course that famously favors no one style of play.

And then Scott Piercy, who appeared safe at 2-under par, hit two shots into the water on the island-green 17th and made a quadruple-bogey 7 that knocked him to 2 over. Lahiri and his side of the draw weren’t entirely off the hook. Also at 7 under was Sebastian Munoz of Colombia with one PGA Tour title. Casey began the championship with a triple bogey. Hoge opened with a 66 on Thursday with Lahiri one shot behind. Moments earlier, Harold Varner III hooded a wedge with so much side spin that it raced left across the ninth green and settled inches away for a tap-in birdie.

WATCH: Shane Lowry drains awesome hole in one on famous 17th ... (CBSSports.com)

Shane Lowry made just the 10th hole in one in the history of the famous par-3 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass during the third round of the 2022 Players ...

1 Lowry's 1 is just the fourth since 2002 on the 17th and the first since Ryan Moore did it to open play in 2019. The pin for Round 3 was at the front of the green where we've seen aces fall in past years, and it was playing a mere 123 yards.

Players battle through cold weather at TPC Sawgrass (TSN)

Growing up in Ontario, Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners played golf on a lot of frosty mornings which may explain why they fared so well on Sunday at the ...

Rather than pitch it back to safety, Conners decided to take a risky line, hitting his ball from pine straw, over some branches on one tree, under some on another and onto the green. He dropped just over 60 feet of putts including a 16-footer for birdie on the eighth hole. That wasn’t the case for Hadwin, who had to battle the rain and heavy winds over the first three days. “Missed a very short one, and just hit it to like 80 feet, I think, back-to-back holes and three-putted, which kind of stung a little bit. “Enjoyment, to me, is to be able to hit the shot as I'm visualizing it or as I'm feeling it or seeing it. Conners, Pendrith and Adam Hadwin, who finished his second round at even par, all survived the cut which came at two over. He seemed to find the right combination as he was five under through 11 holes of his third round. Growing up in Ontario, Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners played golf on a lot of frosty mornings which may explain why they fared so well on Sunday at the Players Championship when temperatures were barely above freezing when play began. The 34-year-old has struggled with his game this year with his best finish a tie for 40th. “I'm not used to playing temperatures sub-40 (Fahrenheit), and I did struggle a little bit when I came out, but it was nice to just get back into a good process and a good rhythm.” He was a shot up on Tom Hoge and Harold Varner III when play was suspended due to darkness just before 7:30 p.m. The temperature was three degrees when play started, just the latest addition to a week of crazy weather that’s included driving rain, thunder and lightning, and high winds.

Saturday's high winds make TPC Sawgrass' 17th even tougher (pgatour.com)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Caddies should've been compensated with hazard pay. They may need to re-sod the drop area before Sunday.

The difficulty was apparent right from the start, as the first three players to play the hole Saturday all hit it into the water. Many players took a detour to the drop area before arriving at the walkway. The wind was blowing so hard that there were ripples on the lake. Twenty-one players had to play the 17th hole Saturday afternoon as they completed the weather-delayed first round. But, after two days of heavy rains that soaked the Stadium Course, the show had to go on. One of Richard Branson’s private islands had a higher population density than the 17th hole on Saturday.

Canadians have a shot heading into delayed final round of The ... (Toronto Star)

Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith will be within range when play resumes Monday with the PGA Tour's biggest purse up for grabs.

Conners was also 1 over for the third round and will start with a putt of just over five feet on No. 10. Sixty-two percent of the golfers who made the cut played in that wave, which played three strokes easier. Pendrith said the mid-tournament break was beneficial, after playing more than originally scheduled early in the season. The winner receives $3.6 million (U.S.) from a record purse of $20 million. PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. After Corey Conners called in two rules officials on the 15th hole at TPC Sawgrass he hit a low, hooking 5-iron out of the trees to within 30 feet from 189 yards. His near-ace came just two groups after Shane Lowry made an actual ace — the 10th overall at the iconic island-green hole.

Lahiri leads third round at frigid TPC Sawgrass (TSN)

Tom Hoge and Harold Varner III each birdied their last hole at the par-5 ninth before darkness suspended play. That pulled them within one shot of Lahiri, who ...

And then Scott Piercy, who appeared safe at 2-under par, hit two shots into the water on the island-green 17th and made a quadruple-bogey 7 that knocked him to 2 over. Lowry had himself a day on one of the most famous holes in golf. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler can count themselves among the fortunate. And yeah, there’s a big difference,” Varner said. He found the right combination. Sixteen players were within four shots of the lead, and the third round wasn't even over. Doug Ghim, at 6-under par, was holding his own despite getting the short end. Paul Casey has the most experience in pressure situations with his Ryder Cup experience. “So it was amazing.” Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., was at 1 under through 12 holes. I’m not used to playing temperatures sub-40, and I did struggle a little bit when I came out,” Lahiri said. They were among 27 players who went two days before hitting another shot that counted.

Players Championship cut finally made following bitterly cold Florida ... (usatoday.com)

When 36 holes were complete at the Players Championship, Sam Burns and Tom Hoge were atop the leaderboard at 7 under.

“I just tried to hit a lot of fairways and greens. It was certainly difficult out there still this morning. It is what it is.” “It was really, really cold this morning. Caddies were dipping towels into buckets of water to clean clubs and golf balls in the future; the towels froze up quickly. But this morning was like as cold as I think I’ve ever played a Tour event, for sure.”
