Oil concerns give Iran the upper hand in nuclear talks: Lawmakers (Aljazeera.com)

A full return of Iranian oil would have an effect, but does it give Tehran a major advantage in nuclear negotiations?

The country also reached an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week to provide sufficient information about inquiries into previously undeclared radioactive material at several sites. “Is the US going to concede against a nuclear Iran in favour of its energy needs? But Shokouhi pointed out that despite having the second-largest natural gas reserves in the world, the country is not currently in a place to account for other countries’ natural gas needs as it is dedicating the overwhelming majority of its produced gas to increasing local demand and cannot immediately boost production significantly. Shokouhi said a return of Iranian oil to global markets could happen within months and could certainly have a noticeable effect on global supply and prices, as the country has both reserves at the ready and infrastructure in place to pump out more. A statement signed by 160 of Iran’s 290 members of parliament was read out publicly on Sunday. It said Tehran should not bind itself by “fabricated deadlines” by the West and push for its demands in the talks in the Austrian capital. Tehran, Iran – Iran should use the opportunity provided by instability in the global energy markets and push its demands in nuclear talks in Vienna, a majority of Iranian lawmakers have suggested.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards claim the missile attacks, saying it targeted Israeli 'strategic centre' in Iraq.

Iran has denied involvement in those attacks. The last time ballistic missiles were directed at US forces was in January 2020 – an Iranian retaliation for the US killing earlier that month of its military commander Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport. The US forces stationed at Erbil’s international airport complex have in the past come under fire from rocket and drone attacks that US officials blame on Iran-aligned armed groups, but no such attacks have occurred for several months. A US State Department spokesperson called it an “outrageous attack” but said no Americans were hurt and there was no damage to US government facilities in Erbil. “Parts of the fired missiles were retrieved and it was manufactured by Iran,” he said. Iran has decided to temporarily suspend its secret Baghdad-brokered talks aimed at defusing yearslong tensions with regional rival Saudi Arabia, ...

The pause in diplomatic talks between the countries that have long competed for influence across the Middle East comes at a tense time for the region. The Baghdad-mediated talks between the regional foes began quietly in Iraq’s capital last year as Saudi Arabia sought a way to end its disastrous war against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, a conflict that has spawned the world’s worst humanitarian disaster and brought rebel drones and missiles raining down on Saudi airports and oil facilities. Iran, the largest Shiite Muslim country in the world, and Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties in 2016 after Saudi Arabia executed prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr. Angry Iranians protesting the execution stormed two Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, fueling years of animosity between the countries.

Iran claims responsibility for missile strike near US consulate in Iraq (unknown)

Revolutionary Guards say target in Erbil was Israeli 'strategic centre' following attack in Syria.

The US defence official said it was still uncertain exactly how many missiles were fired and exactly where they had landed. One Iraqi official in Baghdad initially said several missiles had hit the US consulate in Erbil and that it was the target of the attack. In retaliation, Iran launched a barrage of missiles at al-Asad airbase, where US troops were stationed. Later, Lawk Ghafari, the head of Kurdistan’s foreign media office, said none of the missiles had struck the US facility but that areas around the compound had been hit. The troops will still provide air support and other military aid for Iraq’s fight against Islamic State. US forces stationed at Erbil’s airport compound have come under fire from rocket and drone attacks in the past, with US officials blaming Iran-backed groups.
