Day 2 review: THE PLAYERS Championship (pgatour.com)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A quick look at Friday at THE PLAYERS Championship, where weather won the day once again.

DUSTIN JOHNSON (4 under thru 16): The former FedExCup champ had hit his tee shot at the island-green 17th to 18 feet when play was delayed. RORY McILROY (1 over thru 15): It was an up-and-down day for the 2019 champ. SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER (4 under thru 15): The FedExCup leader is off to another strong start, going bogey-free thus far. The par-4 sixth hole hasn’t been a pushover, playing as the 11th most difficult so far at 4.008, but it is penalty-free. Players did not return to the course Friday, leaving 47 players yet to complete the first round (Luke List withdrew mid-round) and a requiring a Monday finish at earliest. After Tyler McCumber’s early-Friday withdrawal (shoulder injury), Thompson was next man up, and he took advantage with two birdies and an eagle in his first five holes. While the emotions remain raw, Day is making his best efforts to continue to do what his mother loved watching him do. “We’re into a Monday finish,” said PGA TOUR Chief Referee Gary Young. “We know that.” The opening round will resume no earlier than 11 a.m. ET Saturday, with players to receive the next update at 7 a.m. ET. The last Monday finish at THE PLAYERS came in 2005, with Fred Funk as champion. Day was a late WD from last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational when he rushed to his mother Dening’s side as she lost her five-year battle with cancer. “Something that you kind of wish you would keep playing and keep the momentum going, but the course is unplayable. The Australian reached 4-under twice on the back nine after par-5 birdies only to give a shot back each time on the following holes. “We were just trying to stay in the moment and not get too ahead of ourselves with all the rain.

The PGA Tour winner dunked a sand wedge from 96 yards on the par-4 fourth hole, his 13th of the day, for an eagle to get to 6-under. “We were kind of looking forward to a grindfest,” said Garnett, who played with Canadian Adam Hadwin (1-under). “I've always played well in the opposite-field events in the islands where it's windy and rainy. “I actually played stretches of really nice golf. “My putting from inside of 10 feet wasn't very sharp and I probably left a handful of those out there.” He parred both, however, and finished with a 4-under 68.
