Over Aussie Open shock, Canada's Fernandez is battle-tested ... (TSN)

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Leylah Fernandez's brief history at the BNP Paribas Open is a snapshot of her meteoric rise in women's tennis.

But in the end, she and coach/father Jorge decided to stick with the original plan. So it was more trying to get used to the tempo once again,” Fernandez said. And I just had to take a step back and see what I did do wrong,” Fernandez said. When I won, there was only the volunteers and the ball kids in the stands,” Fernandez said in an interview this week. It just didn’t go according to plan.” This year, she faced only one player outside the top 100. Fernandez defended her title in Monterrey last Sunday against a much stronger field than she faced in 2021. They played a lot more tournaments. “I think it was just one of those tournaments that didn’t go — at all — well. It had that soccer kind of environment, which I love. So we're both going at it and they're enjoying it a lot. "Fans, everybody who understands sport know it’s just like a battlefield.

Scouting Report: Daniil Medvedev & Rafael Nadal Headline ... (ATP Tour)

Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal will look to continue their strong starts to the season at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells for the first ATP Masters ...

The World No. 12 defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in last year's Indian Wells final to become the first British champion in the tournament’s 45-year history. The Croatians will face stiff competition from Toronto titlists Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, four-time Masters 1000 victors Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos and reigning Indian Wells champions John Peers and Filip Polasek. Singles stars Alcaraz and Pablo Carreno Busta will team, with Australian Open champions Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis also in action. Kyrgios soared to the Australian Open men’s doubles crown with Thanasi Kokkinakis and will make his fifth appearance in Indian Wells, with his highlight a quarter-final run in 2017. The 24-year-old has won five ATP 500 crowns, but will be targeting his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. The Masters 1000 event was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, before it was moved to October last season, also because of the pandemic. Rafael Nadal will look to extend his perfect 15-0 start to the season, while Stefanos Tsitsipas will be seeking his first title of the year.

Unvaccinated Novak Djokovic officially withdraws from BNP Paribas ... (USA TODAY)

Due to travel restrictions for unvaccinated foreigners flying into the U.S., the 20-time Grand Slam champion is unable to enter into the country.

But after a public clash with the country’s health officials, he was eventually expelled from the country and flew home to Serbia. Djokovic remained in the BNP Paribas Open draw until Wednesday, when the tournament announced his withdrawal due to his inability to travel into the country. Djokovic holds the record for most consecutive matches won (19) at Indian Wells, which he accomplished from 2014-17, and his 85% (50-9) win percentage is the highest in tournament history. Djokovic's absence from the tournament that he’s won five times will now be extended at least another year. "While I was automatically in the @BNPParibasOpen and @MiamiOpen draw, I knew it would be unlikely I'd be able to travel," Djokovic tweeted. The Miami Open drew 388,734 in 2019. The country has no such mandate for U.S. citizens, permanent residents or those traveling on an immigration visa. “As of today, … I can’t go — can’t enter United States,” Djokovic said. “As of today, I’m not able to play. He lost that distinction to Daniil Medvedev. The BNP Paribas Open began Monday with qualifying. Next to the cutouts were the words, "We miss you."

Naomi Osaka at Indian Wells: 'I'm at peace with myself' (Los Angeles Times)

Naomi Osaka enters the BNP Paribas Open with confidence she can enjoy tennis again after sharing her mental health struggles last year.

“I’m not saying it would have been easy, but I just think after winning the Grand Slams and stuff, I thought it was kind of an automatic thing so I think just losing there kind of reminded me that I was human. I’m not saying that I didn’t think I was human, but it was on hard court, so I thought that significantly boosted my chances. I was playing against the wind. “This moment in my life with playing tennis is something I’ve trained for, for years and years,” Osaka said. “I was playing against her. “Usually when I walk around there’s people that are like, ‘Win the tournament,’ or ‘I have tickets to the finals, see you there,’ kind of thing,” Osaka said. “I guess I just thought I could do everything, if that makes sense. The change she felt was subtle but momentous to Osaka, who last year acknowledged she had been experiencing bouts of depression and anxiety. She needed a lot of time and reflection to reach this point. “Actually, everyone was saying, ‘I hope you have fun.’ I know that’s not like the biggest difference, but it meant a lot to me. “I feel like everyone’s improving. The closeness of fans to the practice courts was happily the same, too.
