What are Colts' best QB options after Carson Wentz trade? (Sportsnet.ca)

The Indianapolis Colts ended the Carson Wentz experiment after just one season but where does the team go from here? There's no shortage of options.

If you’re the Colts and you add Jimmy G, you’d be turning from one QB known for making risky passes and untimely interceptions to another. The Colts don’t hold a first-round selection in 2022. They traded that pick to the Eagles to acquire Wentz one year ago. The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers are among the teams expected to show interest in Trubisky. Teddy Bridgewater, no longer in the picture in Denver, would be a cost-effective, short-term option. They fell to the Bills in the playoffs, though, and Rivers announced his retirement later that off-season. He was used in various short-yardage situations but has only attempted 30 regular-season passes in the past two years. He had 14 TDs to just three INTs in seven appearances with the Saints before his season-ending knee injury. Brissett went 7-8 in 15 starts (Brian Hoyer went 0-1 that year) with a 3:1 TD:INT ratio and the Colts missed the playoffs. “I'd like to quit Band-Aiding it,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters in January when discussing the QB situation at his end-of-season press conference. The following year saw Philip Rivers come to town for his final NFL season. He’s 37-28 with only one sub-.500 season plus a pair of playoff appearances over the past four years.

Carson Wentz trade: Frank Reich apologized to Colts owner Jim ... (Sporting News)

The Colts had high hopes for Carson Wentz when they traded a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 first-round to the Eagles to get the former Pro Bowler.

Now, Reich and the team will look for an answer at the quarterback position (again) as his seat starts to slowly but surely warm up. Obviously, it won't end up being in Indianapolis, as the Colts decided to part with Wentz after just one season. Wentz was inconsistent during his lone season with the Colts and failed to lead the team to the playoffs despite their expectations to be a potential AFC contender.

Carson Wentz trade details: What did the Commanders give up for ... (NBC Sports)

The Commanders acquired quarterback Carson Wentz in a trade with the Colts that included four draft picks.

This move gives the Commanders a chance to see how Wentz fares playing for his third team in as many years. If he doesn’t, they can release him and start over again — albeit with one fewer draft pick in 2023. The conditional pick is similar to the one that was included in the Colts’ initial trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Wentz last offseason. Per Over The Cap, the trade leaves Washington with about $5.9 million in cap space with free agency set to open March 16. However, neither of those salaries are guaranteed, so the team could cut him after the 2022 season without incurring any dead money. Commanders get: Carson Wentz, 2022 second-round pick (No. 47 overall), 2022 seventh-round pick (No. 236)

The Washington Commanders' Super Bowl odds actually dropped ... (GolfDigest.com)

The Washington Commanders weren't winning the Super Bowl without Carson Wentz and they aren't winning it with him either.

Of course, it’s worth noting that the Commanders weren’t going to win the Super Bowl anyway, so this is all sort of moot. Wednesday was a no good, terrible, very bad day for Carson Wentz. To the naked eye, his trade to the Washington Commanders might seem like a fresh start, but it’s so much messier than that. Vegas believes the Washington Commanders, whose only quarterback currently under contract is Taylor Heinicke, actually got worse by trading for Carson Wentz, with the team’s Super Bowl LVII odds falling from 60-1 to 75-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Carson Wentz trade grades: Did Colts 'make out like bandits' or ... (The Indianapolis Star)

Carson Wentz is on the move to Washington. Here's how experts say Chris Ballard did with the deal.

"With nine picks in this year's draft, Indianapolis has the resources to put together a trade for Garoppolo, a former Super Bowl starter who has a 37-16 career record as a starting quarterback. "While other picks were included, the Colts essentially gave up their 2022 first-round pick for one season with Wentz, a season that ended in disappointment," Bryan DeArdo wrote. And yet, the Colts got a massive downgrade in value from Washington. The Colts traded a 2021 third-round pick and their 16th overall pick in this year’s draft for Wentz, and they failed to make the playoffs. After dealing Wentz just a year after they got him, they are now stuck with a roster seemingly ready to win but have no clear option at quarterback, a form of football purgatory." While the Colts are probably patting themselves on the back for getting anything of value for Wentz following their odd offseason smear campaign, the fact of the matter is they absolutely cut off their nose to spite their face with their previous trade for Wentz. "The Colts made a mistake by making their initial trade for Wentz," Jacob Camenker said.

Carson Wentz changerait (encore) d'équipe - TVA Sports (TVA Sports)
