With the 2022 NFL Draft less than two months away, the NFL is finalizing its compensatory picks for the draft. Confused about what compensatory picks are ...
The NFL began awarding compensatory picks in 1994. Compensatory picks are typically awarded prior to the start of the new league year. The picks awarded for diverse hires supplement the standard 32 picks, allowing the combined total to exceed 32.

After washing out in Cleveland, Corbett found his way after being traded to the Rams and lived up to his draft slot (33rd in 2018) last season. Hughes is still going strong into his mid-30s (he turns 34 in August), and there’s an outsized demand for edge-rush help with defenses abandoning the blitz against elite quarterbacks. It’s fair to wonder how much of that was due to Matthew Stafford’s command of the offense, protections and the fact that defenses were loath to blitz Stafford (a leaguewide trend against elite quarterbacks), making life easier for his O-line. But in a league starved for competent line play, Corbett will surely get a multiyear deal this offseason. After a disappointing couple of seasons to wrap up his tenure in Cleveland, Ogunjobi moved to Cininnati on a one-year deal, and from the nose to three-technique, and recaptured his early-career form. His next team (or current one) will have to pay handsomely for the privilege now. There are limitations in coverage, though a team that asks him to blitz more often might have itself one of the NFL’s better three-down ’backers. —GG While he is, at times, susceptible against straight linear speed (who isn’t without adequate safety help?), Davis is physical and doesn’t get lost in bunch and trip formation plays that seem to pin down a lot of good cornerbacks in legal traffic. He’ll enter next year in his age-26 season, coming off his best year against the pass (an opposing quarterback completion percentage under 50%) and one of his best seasons as a tackler. Still, at a time when run-oriented offenses are poised to throttle the NFL, Clowney represents a set edge on one side of the ball, an incredibly valuable presence for any defense needing to increase stoutness. He’ll be 33 in May; perhaps he’s more interested in scaling back to a part-time role and his effectiveness was surely maximized when paired with Tom Brady (who’d better not come back because we’ve already given him all the sendoff he’s getting). But there’s no denying that the lighter, sleeker Gronk of the past two years was moving better as a receiver than he was in his late-Patriots days. Any team trying to poach him will have to decide whether the real Jessie Bates was the instinctive, rangy and physical ballhawk who showed up in 2020 and in last year’s postseason, or the inconsistent version (both in coverage and as a tackler) of the ’21 regular season. Without hyperbole, it’s safe to call him one of the best free agent values of the last decade as a member of the Packers last year.
A roundup of the eight NFL teams that opted to place the franchise tag on a player prior to Tuesday's deadline.
Gesicki had made a total of $6.6 million in his first four seasons with the Dolphins, and it remains possible that he and the team could still work out a longer-term extension between now and mid-July. If Schultz signs it, the sides will have until July 15 to come to terms on a longer contract that would have less of a salary cap hit as Dallas looks for relief. Adams and the Packers now have until July 15 to work out a long-term extension. By expending that much draft capital on protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes' blind side, it became clear that Kansas City planned to either sign Brown to an extension or place the franchise tag on him. He has 342 catches for 4,643 yards and 29 touchdowns. The exact number is not yet available, but it's likely to be about $16.5 million. Tuesday is the deadline for franchise tags. Jarwin's future now is in doubt because of a hip issue requiring career-threatening surgery. He was a key player in 2021 as the Bengals reached their first Super Bowl in 33 years. The Dolphins on Tuesday placed the franchise tag for the coming season on Gesicki, ensuring that the tight end will be back for 2022 instead of hitting the free agent market. He caught 35 passes for 475 yards and four touchdowns. (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys placed the franchise tag on tight end Dalton Schultz on Tuesday, buying time to agree on a long-term deal for one of Dak Prescott's most reliable targets.
The NFL's quarterback market continues to explode, but will anyone be able to top Patrick Mahomes?
Mahomes and Allen were the only quarterbacks in the $200 million club before the 2022 NFL offseason. The middle class for quarterbacks is largely gone in terms of total value; only Kirk Cousins is being paid between $40 million and $118 million. That Watson got nearly $80 million more in guarantees than Rodgers and Allen is shocking. Each of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks in terms of average annual value is making at least $30 million per year. Rodgers signed an extension where he is set to make an average of just under $50.3 million per year on his new three-year contract. Less than a year later, he already has dropped to third place in terms of total guaranteed money. Before we answer that question, let's first establish that the best way to compare salaries in the NFL is by using a contract's average annual value. Sporting News takes an in-depth look at the league's highest-earning quarterbacks for 2022 and how much they are making in terms of average annual value, guarantees and overall money. It used to be rare to see an NFL team giving out a $100 million contract. Each year, new deals seem to one-up the last crop of extensions. The NFL quarterback market has shown no signs of slowing down, either. Quarterback is the most important position in the league and no team wants to get stuck with spotty play from its signal-caller.

The sparkling start to his career (he posted at least 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his first three pro seasons) ends up seeming further away than ever. Although perhaps that would be a fitting outcome for a player who has run for 50-plus yards in almost exactly half of his career regular-season games (32 of 63). This scenario looms much larger if he changes teams and shrinks considerably if he stays in Atlanta with the coach (Arthur Smith) who finally figured out how to make the most of his potential. It's probably reasonable to assume Armstead will miss some time each year, given that he has yet to play a full season in the NFL. But there's a difference between losing him for one or two games per season and having to make up for his absence for several weeks. His health is also something to keep an eye on after he was sidelined by a calf injury in 2021 and underwent knee surgery in January. Boom: Gregory fulfills the potential that has been hinted at since the Cowboys drafted him in 2015, notching double-digit sacks for the first time.
