What We Know About Dylan McDermott's 'FBI: Most Wanted' Character (TV Insider)

Plus, could McDermott return to 'Law & Order: Organized Crime'?

But might McDermott’s character have history with any of the team that could lend itself to making the transition easier or harder, depending on just what that might be? When it comes to how he leads, Hudgins shared, they thought of having “somebody who does have a different style than Jess, somebody who has a different outlook, maybe approaches the cases in a different way, but ultimately just like Jess, is motivated by justice, by getting the fugitive in every episode.” The Fugitive Task Force on FBI: Most Wanted has lost its leader, and it might have just happened, but we — and they, soon — must look to the future.

Why FBI: Most Wanted Ended Jess LaCroix's Story With That Twist ... (Cinema Blend)

Showrunner David Hudgins broke down why FBI: Most Wanted decided to end Jess' story that way after Julian McMahon's departure.

FBI: Most Wanted said goodbye to another original member of the team at the beginning of Season 3, when Kenny Crosby was injured to allow for the exit of Kellan Lutz, so it was down to Barnes and Hana from the original team. The episode didn’t just end on the immediate moment of Sarah finding out about Jess’ death, but continued the sequence with her realizing that their trip to Bali will never happen, and Jess will never finish painting the room blue, and the life that they’d built together was over in one fell swoop. FBI: Most Wanted said goodbye to longtime leading man Julian McMahon in the latest episode, with a devastating twist that will change the series forever.

How 'FBI: Most Wanted' Wrote Out Julian McMahon — and How Dylan McDermott Will Fit in Post-'Law & Order: Organized Crime'. By ...

It will always be a fugitive man hunt show — that’s the bread and butter — but with with Dylan coming in and having a different style, different background and different way of dealing with the team, having to get to know them and vice versa, there’s just a lot of story to play there. Sort of hanging in the background of those episodes is this idea of “Who’s it gonna be? We’re going to play the absence. We’re going to play the grief. We spent a lot of time in the room drafting what that character could look like. We really are looking at it as an opportunity to invigorate the show, to reinvent a little bit. You want to keep playing out the emotion of that, which is why we have the ending where Hana [Keisha Castle-Hughes] and Barnes [Roxy Sternberg] go to tell Sarah [Jennifer Landon]. Then we get to dad [Terry O’Quinn], and we end up having to go tell Tali [YaYa Gosselin]. We just felt like that ending of them having to knock on the door and tell Tali was so powerful. And inherent in that premise is the idea that it’s risky, it’s dangerous and there’s always the chance that you could get injured or killed in the line of duty. The fact that it happened literally in the heart of New York City was something that I thought was perfect for the character. At the end, Julian being the very gracious person that he is, said, “Look, I trust you guys to do what you think is best for the show and best for the story. It was emotional is what I will say, and I thought everybody did a great job with it, and I was happy. Unfortunately, so did her ex, who pulled a gun on her, prompting Jess to stand in front of the woman in order to save her life.

Julian McMahon said goodbye to his FBI: Most Wanted character Jess LaCroix in Tuesday night's episode of the CBS series.

And we just decided that true to the premise of the show, this was what was going to happen to Jess— he gets killed in the line of duty. When he was all in, we were thrilled because it fits perfectly with what we wanted to do and where we want to take the show. And ultimately, I think it’s going to bring the team closer together. It will always be about the manhunt and getting justice — that’s the core of the show. The Fugitive Task Force is the elite squad of the FBI. You don’t get that job unless you know what you’re doing. We are going to be exploring those characters and their grief, the team’s grief, and how they’re dealing with his absence over the next couple of episodes. But as writers, we were always interested in exploring the emotion, the fallout, the grief, and the reality of that moment — which is why you have Barnes and Hana (Keisha Castle Hughes) telling Sarah. They’re all so great in that scene. Ultimately, in the writers room, we kept coming back to this notion that the premise of this show is Most Wanted — we’re chasing the worst of the worst, the most dangerous of the dangerous. It was just extremely emotional for everybody but we all stepped up and got it done in a great way. "Shattered" - The team pursues an abusive man on the war path to find his ex-girlfriend, who is trying to escape him for good. Amid their search, a new clue blows the whole thing wide open: Lucy had given birth to Harley’s daughter and never told him of her existence.
