As prime minister of one of her Commonwealth realms, the palace would naturally endeavour to organise a meeting with the Queen during his flying visit. Mr Trudeau met the Queen several times as a young child in the 1970s as his father, Pierre Trudeau, was one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers. The monarch, who is also Queen of Canada, was pictured standing and smiling warmly at Mr Trudeau as he held her right hand in both of his. The Queen, who usually takes a neutral stand on political matters, greeted Mr Trudeau in front of a vase of blue and yellow flowers and also wore a blue patterned dress, in what appeared to be a subtle message of support for Ukraine. Her Majesty held an audience with Mr Trudeau during his visit to the UK for talks on the war in Ukraine - and a vase of flowers on display appeared to be a tacit message of support for the Ukrainian people. The monarch held an audience with Mr Trudeau at Windsor Castle today, as he is in the UK for talks on the war in Ukraine with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte.

The monarch appeared to be in good spirits as she made a return to in-person duties, a fortnight on from her coronavirus diagnosis.

It’s not the first time that the monarch, who is also Queen of Canada, has met Trudeau – and in fact their acquaintance dates back many decades. It’s been a busy day for the Queen, marking her return to in-person engagements, during which she also welcomed the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, to her Berkshire home. The Evening Standard reports that Trudeau is currently in the UK to meet with our own Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and the Dutch PM, Mark Rutte, to discuss Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Later in the trip, Trudeau will visit Latvia, where Canada has 500 troops on NATO duty helping to reassure eastern European allies. "That kind of conflict could escalate very quickly and get out of control, leading to a much bigger war. IAEA's Director General Rafael Grossi said te Russians have also switched off some mobile networks and the internet at the plant. "I don't know the number of times the prime minister has had a chance to speak to the new chancellor Germany and that relationship is going to be a very important one going forward," said Paris. The leaders have a responsibility not just to the brave defenders of Ukraine ... they have a responsibility to the stability of the entire continent." The chaotic seizure by Russian troops on Thursday of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant — the biggest in Europe — and the possibility of a chilling catastrophe there is expected to shape the discussion among the leaders.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom at the Royal Air Force Base in Northolt, United Kingdom.

The leaders discussed next steps for the modernization of the free trade agreement between Canada and the United Kingdom and dedicated additional attention to securing reliable supply chains, especially for energy and critical minerals. Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Johnson strongly condemned the ongoing military aggression by Russia against the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine, and worked together to identify additional measures to hold all responsible stakeholders accountable. The two leaders decided to deepen bilateral collaboration with respect to security and intelligence in order to better combat threats to democracy, including foreign interference, economic coercion, disinformation, and cyber-attacks.

The result is other allies have sent Ukraine “much more sophisticated pieces” of military equipment, Mr. Perry said, adding Canada also lags so badly because it has underspent its military budget by billions. Canada has now sanctioned hundreds of Russians connected to Mr. Putin’s regime, but hasn’t yet touched billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is listed as Mr. Navalny’s No. 1 priority. On top of the pressure to do more from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Western leaders are also under pressure domestically. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has a defence spending target of 2 per cent of GDP for its 30 member countries. Canada lags the vast majority, spending just 1.39 per cent as of 2021, according to NATO estimates. A letter from the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which released Mr. Navalny’s recommendations for sanctions, said “each of these individuals actively participates in the oppression and corruption of Putin’s regime.” In a statement, the Conservatives said Canada should work to achieve “at least” NATO’s 2-per-cent target and that Canada should send field hospitals and surplus army vehicles to Ukraine. As it tries to continue to increase the pressure on the Kremlin through sanctions, Mr. Trudeau said the latest additions to the sanctions list are former and current senior government officials, oligarchs and supporters of Russian leadership. Mr. Johnson said he wouldn’t comment on Canada’s military budget but noted that Britain’s is much higher and said “we need a renewed focus on our collective security.” “We have a budget coming up and we are considering the investments that we need to make,” Mr. Trudeau said. “I’m sure in our victory,” said Marina Astapenko, “but we ask the whole world to help us, to arm us, and to give us resources.” Mr. Trudeau vowed to “push back hard against Russia,” but one defence expert said Canada’s low defence spending and log-jammed procurement process leave it limited in what it can offer besieged Ukraine. Mr. Trudeau was pressed on the low spending at a press conference alongside Mr. Johnson and Mr. Rutte and signalled a cash injection could come.
