The Haas Formula One team has terminated its contract with Russian driver Nikita Mazepin and title sponsor Uralkali.
"Haas F1 Team has elected to terminate, with immediate effect, the title partnership of Uralkali, and the driver contract of Nikita Mazepin," the team said in a statement. "To those who have tried to understand, my eternal thanks. "I am very disappointed to hear that my F1 contract has been terminated," Mazepin said.
Many are falsely citing the fact that Nikita Mazepin is Russian as the reason why his Formula 1 contract was terminated by Haas.
But that was the only race for which that was the case. With that money out of the picture, he was also always going to be out if Haas cut ties with Uralkali. Likewise, it would have been a different end result for any Russian driver not backed by this type of sponsor.

“As with the rest of the Formula 1 community, the team is shocked and saddened by the invasion of Ukraine and wishes for a swift and peaceful end to the conflict.” Pietro Fittipaldi is favourite to replace Mazepin in the team for the 2022 season, although the likes of Antonio Giovinazzi, Nico Hülkenberg and Oscar Piastri have all been linked with the seat. The race was scheduled to take place in September in Sochi. "Haas F1 Team has elected to terminate, with immediate effect, the title partnership of Uralkali, and the driver contract of Nikita Mazepin," the statement said. "To those who have tried to understand, my eternal thanks.
America's only Formula 1 team has announced an immediate termination of Mazepin's contract.
As the invasion continues into its second week, the team has decided that any relationship with Uralkali would be untenable. The most obvious candidate is 2021 Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri, an Alpine-affiliated driver who was left without a ride at any level in 2022. Previous indications from team principal Guenther Steiner were that it would be current team reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi for the team's next test at Bahrain, but the open full-time seat creates some other opportunities.
The driver's future was in question as Motorsport UK banned Russian and Belarusian license holders from competing in the United Kingdom.
On Wednesday, Motorsport UK announced it was banning Russian and Belarusian license holders from competing in the United Kingdom. A week after the Russian invasion began, speculation started surfacing that Mazepin was on his way out of the team and that reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi would get the first call. I have treasured my time in F1 and genuinely hope we can all be together again in better times.
