Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. All of you who have given thoughts and prayers to my family and my wife, thank you. Have faith and stay strong.”
The Republican governor was attending an indoor news conference and was visibly annoyed with students who were wearing masks as he approached the lectern.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, DeSantis has been very vocal about his disdain for mask and vaccine mandates, drawing national attention. He doesn’t have that right,” Brown Sr. told the TV station. “You do not have to wear those masks. So if you wanna wear it, fine, but this is ridiculous,” he said, letting out an audible sigh and shaking his head. “I was a little bit surprised at his tone,” Brown said of the governor, adding that he chose to leave his mask on because there were many unmasked people around and he was wary of getting COVID-19. We’ve got to stop with this COVID theatre.

“Predictably, the leftist propagandists in our media had a meltdown and called me a ‘bully’ for allowing children to breathe fresh air.” The Republican governor outlawed Florida’s schools from passing local mask mandates for students, sparking a protracted battle with some of the state’s largest school districts and the Biden administration over the issue. “Predictably, the leftist propagandists in our media had a meltdown and called me a ‘bully’ for allowing children to breathe fresh air," a campaign email reads.
A visibly annoyed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis admonished a group of high school students for wearing face masks at an indoor news conference Wednesday, ...
His spokesperson, Christina Pushaw, has tweeted defences of the governor's comments, writing “I mean, someone had to say it, after 2 years of propaganda that terrified and manipulated young people. The incident drew criticism of DeSantis on social media. DeSantis, a fierce opponent of virus mask and vaccine mandates, is running for re-election and is considered to be a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate. Though the CDC late last month eased its masking guidelines, the agency is still recommending masks indoors in areas it considers high risk. He doesn’t have that right," Brown Sr. told the TV station. “You do not have to wear those masks.
Ron DeSantis claimed to a group of high schoolers that wearing face masks is “not doing anything," which is not what the scientific evidence says.
If you are an adult and see a group of teens (or anyone for that matter) wearing face masks, why the heck would you tell them to take off their masks? Shouldn’t they have had the “freedom” or “liberty” to cover their noses and mouths? Yeah, maybe a friendlier greeting and some “thank you’s” may have been more in line with valuing and celebrating the students. The authors found that “the preponderance of evidence indicates that mask wearing reduces transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles in both laboratory and clinical contexts. Umm, who exactly said that face masks are “not doing anything?” Wearing a face mask is not like putting fur on a toilet seat, buying boots for a cat, or wearing a necktie. So if you want to wear it, fine, but this is ridiculous.” Speaking of theater, all of this made for interesting theater, sort of in a Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 type of way, as you can see in the video accompanying the following tweet thread from WFLA reporter Evan Donovan:
The Florida governor called mask-wearing “ridiculous” and “COVID theater.”
According to The Washington Post, CDC data shows that the county where DeSantis’s Wednesday event took place continues to record “high levels of the coronavirus,” and masks are “recommended indoors.” So if you want to wear it, fine, but this is ridiculous.” “You do not have to wear those masks,” he said angrily.
